I like to think that Bilbo’s monologue at the beginning of The Hobbit, when he’s explaining what happened to Erebor, is actually just a regurgitation of how Thorin used to tell the story. Like there’s no WAY that brooding and prickly man wouldn’t retell the story of his people’s loss nearly every night by the fire, because he says it’s important, and they need to remember. So much so that Bilbo retained the whole thing. Even years later, he says it all the same way Thorin did, like … word for word, beat for beat, same influxes etc …
But it was important enough to Thorin that Bilbo hung onto the tale every night, just because he wanted Thorin to know it mattered to him too. Bawwww Bagginshield how I’ve missed you bawwwwe
