Getting gifts from Lestat was somewhat of a common occurrence for Rose, but when she was told to meet Lestat in his room, she sensed this was different. Her hand was open, ready, and when she saw the diamond ring, she was left blinking. She highly doubted Lestat was proposing to her, even if it was in a familial way.
She hardly had enough patience to wait for his explanation, but when he did begin speaking, her jaw dropped. Tears sprung to her eyes, and though she tried to blink them away, a few drops of blood slid down her face, her chin.
Looking back up into Lestat’s eyes, she manages a weak smile. She had a hundred questions, but the only important thing that came to her mind to do instead of ask them was place the ring on her right hand, middle finger. That way no one could mistake it for a real engagement ring, but she would be able to wear it, forever.
Voice thick with emotions, she was first grateful to Lestat, pressing her tear stained face to his chest, “Thank you. You don’t…I don’t know if you know what this means, but thank you so much. You’ve always done so much…I can’t begin to repay you. But I will try to live a good life. For you. Always.”
“Non. You owe me nothing. Live a good life for yourself, ma cherie.”, he said, placing his hand along her back as he gently rubbed her shoulder blades in a gesture of comfort. He had anticipated that the gift might make her emotional, and why should it not? His beautifully bloomed Rose had gone through so much in her short mortal life, and she had flourished even without a traditional family. He had long since considered those overrated but, he had still wished better for her than he had been able to give. This was perhaps one way of making up for it, an incredibly small way.
“All I have ever wanted for you is for you to be happy. But, not for my sake, for your own; for you, my precious one, deserve no less.” he said, lifting her chin to look on her tear-stained face. Using his sleeve he helped wipe away some of the blood from her eyes, before leaving the softest peck upon her forehead.
