What's Saturday without a mountain? This Saturday I was solo hiking at Wonderboom Nature Reserve, a trail whose round trip is around 2.8KM and if you're looking for a physical challenge like me you'll have to do it three times. The trail though short has historical significance, a Voortrekker fort at the top speaks of a time when the Boer were fighting over land with the Ndebele nation. The "Wonder Tree" which is the name sake for the reserve is said to be the final resting place of a brave Ndebele chief, they took on guns and cannons with shields and spears. What's Saturday without a mountain? Side note: Don't be caught in between an unstoppable force (gale force winds) and an immovable object (mountain). For the first time ever I was genuinely scared on the Karee trail when strong winds we threatening to blow us right off the mountain. Bad weather aside, #Karee trail, named after a tree we really aren't interested in gave us the long overdue hiking challenge we've been craving since they let us back onto the mountains. What's Saturday without a mountain Well this Saturday the mountain was a bit small. I was told that our hiking destination this time was going to be in Krugersdorp and I was reluctant cause it's not really known for having challenging mountains. In the spirit of it being a Jozi mountain trail this time the partner in crime and I also brought in Jnr. I'm the first to admit that I was pleasantly surprised when I got onto the trail, I thought the main feature was the waterfall but it pales in comparison to the Spookhuis that looks like it was taken from the pages of Stephen King and I started really enjoying the sights and views as soon as we hit Poplars Tunnel, the lack of mountainous terrain that I've gotten accustomed to was overshadowed by the beauty of the lake, the vegetation around it, the ruins that told different stories and the waterfall that is the perfect background for happy people.
