He's giving his client a skin fade on the sides, with a textured Ceasar cut up top. For those who don't know, the straight bangs in front is what classifies the style as a Ceasar haircut. To achieve this, he sections off the top of the hair in a U shape. Everything below that line is tapered into a skin fade. Jay uses a texturizing powder to add a little volume to the top.

He wants to keep the weight of the beard and the length of the "tache. The clients beard is a bit thin, so Jay recommends trimming the longer wiry hairs to make it appear thicker. This allows the thinner, slower growing hairs to catch up with the denser bottom hairs.
