Something else I would have liked to see more of throughout the series is Merlin just using his powers on instinct before he can stop it like when he saved Gaius from that fall.
It would’ve been cool to see Merlin struggling to contain all this power especially at the start of the series while he’s still learning to harness his magic:
Like maybe Arthur throws something at Merlin while half paying attention but Merlin’s magic stops it midflight and he has to quickly unfreeze and take the hit to avoid suspicion
Gwen asks Merlin to pass her the washing but it’s moving before he can even get his hands on it and Merlin has to scramble after it to grab the basket midair
Merlin’s carrying a meal up to the princes chambers and trips, his magic catching him and the tray of food and quickly righting them both, and Merlin glances around to see if anyone noticed
Gaius asks him to light a candle and suddenly every wick in the room is lit before he can even finish his sentence
It’s only after Gaius gives Merlin the spell book that he learns any kind of control, but even then, there would still be moments of panic or excitement that cause his magic to flare on instinct
I’m rewatching Merlin rn and it’s just so funny that they keep calling Merlin the most powerful sorcerer that ever lived then pretty much every episode there’s some kind of magic that’s “too powerful for even Emrys’ powers” HOW ? He’s the most powerful sorcerer to ever walk the earth but seemingly anyone and everyone can cast more powerful spells than him? Ik he’s still learning for most of the series but still

I don't know if this is a popular theory but the idea that the prophecy did not come true because Merlin was no longer Merlin by the end, so he couldn't save Arthur.
Killgarah tells us in s1 that in order to unite Albion, Arthur and MERLIN have to work together. However, as Merlin slowly stops working WITH Arthur and instead starts working FOR Arthur he chips away the pieces that were Merlin. Gaius even implies that when he asks Merlin about the boy who walked in his chambers years ago.
The Merlin who would've united Albion would've helped Morgana, wouldn't have isolated Mordred, wouldn't have lied to Arthur about his thoughts, wouldn't have hidden Morgana's involvement with GwenCelot. All of these things pushed the idea of Albion further away, because all of these things pushed Merlin away from being Merlin. In a way, he got so concerned with being Emrys, that he forgot that Emrys was just a name for Merlin and not two different identities.
It's like how in a Greek Tragedy the main character tried his best to stop the passage of the prophecy, therefore actually making it happen. Merlin did the opposite, where he tried his best to make the prophecy come true therefore accidentally ended up sabotaging it.
I think this also plays into Arthur coming back from Lake Avalon. Arthur fulfilled his end of the deal: He became a just, noble ruler, and therefore he was rewarded with eternal rest with his wife, and his knights. Merlin on the other hand deviated from his nature, and did not remain true to himself, and is therefore cursed with eternal exhaustion and isolation in the real world.
