The city wasn’t far. It was always a bit rougher as the road fully left what was considered the countryside and began to be the city limits. Not that he felt he’d be around to get used to it, but he did hope it wouldn’t be of a terrible discomfort to you if you ever rode into the city. He pressed his lips together, and sat back. The curtain flapped back into place.

He felt bad that he had snuck away after he had held you close, and tight after passions embrace. He needed to know, your final memories would be of his love for you, for the child you two will have. He did not wish you to feel the anguish of saying goodbye, or having the sight of him rolling off in the carriage. Surely, that would have brought about some heartbreak, that he did not wish to make any sharper or harder than it had to be.

After shaving by the flickering light of the candle, in the trudon and splashed on his face the aftershave on, he had snuck a final glance. Nestled in the warm of sleep, you had reached out and now held his pillow. How he wished he could toss asunder the story of the royalist solider and just stay here with you and the child, that would surely be here like sun at dawn, one day soon but he could not. It would be shameful. He took a life, now he had to do what was right, and true.

As the carriage, continued to roll over the dirt and rocks, strewn branch on the road, his mind still whirled with disjointed memories. He could still smell the saw dust that littered the warehouse floors. At night, that place was theirs. Plans were forged, toasts were made and memories had been carved into all their hearts, fueling their fiery drive to do right by France.

But one dark, cold night you had stumbled inside, with soft eyes and soft blue silken scarf. The strands of your lives would be twined together.

The bark of the mighty willow, was unforgiving his first visit, as if it was testing his feelings for you. But no discomfort could keep him from you. And once, he felt your soft, warm form ease against him, he knew he’d never want to let go. The soft perfumed strands of your hair would tickle his nose.

The fire he saw ignite in your eyes with wine, warming your belly as one who was overly familiar with him, caused you to react to what you had only shown him with a soft smile or gentle blush, was strong and powerful. You could be and would be strong for the love you would go on to share.

He bit down on his lip at that. You are strong, you would continue to be without him. You’d raise their child right; there would be love and enjoyment of life. He knew his mother would make sure you and the baby would never have a need or a want go unattended to.

He laid the dueling swords, on the narrow cot, to call it a bed was not even a poetic lie. But he was not there to ruffle the feathers of the innkeeper, he had been a kind man ever since he had discovered this establishment.

That beast from the royal army, had been accept his offer with the swords.

A sharp knock interrupted his thoughts, with narrow eyes he glanced back at the door and then back at the swords and covered them. Another knock filled the small space. He did not wish for idle speak with innkeeper or his wife for that matter. They should be pleased, he is spending more than his usual frivolities.

He absently, fiddled with a button on his coat before he opened the door, annoyance prickled him. No one here had reason to be knocking.

“I see you made it.” Bellamy, greeted loudly, his face already flushed with a wine, he must have had a few sips on.

He rose an eyebrow. “You couldn’t have waited till I came back down?”

A shadow fell over the man’s fleshy face. “I do believe, the solider is already here. And the bar maid has already draped herself over him more than once.”

“She told me, he only arrived later into the night.”

His old friend shrugged. “Perhaps, she tipped him off perhaps he is getting ready to depart. We should let him.”

“I never evaded, I have never ran.”

“Right. But you also never had one who captured your heart, had a child that will have your heart’s beauty and your stubborn will.”

“Yes. But Lachesis gave me her, gave me this chance. She is aware of my honor. I could not honor that love if I were to run.”

“She had better have seen this in the thread, that spun from you and has been just and right with entwining you with another.”

“As I am grateful for this chance, this dream. I do hope you are right.”

The creaking for the wooden steps were sharper, louder. Each step echoed in his ears, as he entered the open area of the bar. Stale air swirled and his stomach churned.
