The more I look into it, the more obsessed I am with the level of detail put into the remake, even if some of the choices are odd. There was a lot of understanding— Here’s some things I read in the 1990 working script for the original that end up, sort of, in 2017. It might be coincidence but…
Maurice is not just Tresspassing but called a thief. In 1990 it’s a music box, in 2017 he actually does intend to take a rose- which is what happens in the original fairy tale.
Belle asks if everything in the castle is alive, directly asking about a hairbrush.
Wardrobe dressing Belle for dinner right after meeting her.
Lefou attempts to spell Gaston at the end of the number
Belle mentions her father slightly more + directly mentions status as a prisoner (at least at first)
I don’t know how to describe it but there’s more of a temper/snap to 1990 and 2017 Belle, while OG Belle has her moments she’s more active/calm(?)
While the original script had a lot of comedic moments there was also a bit of a darker edge the 2017 picks up, a bit more into the curse + the sadness and longing that is lightened in 1991. (The stage musical also goes into this a little more too)

1990 script is interesting. A lot of core elements are there, there’s also a lot they were still working out (Chip is there sometimes but still labeled Music box for most) but there was also some parts that actually made it to screen much later in 2017! That could be it’s own post (let me know)
Something about the end to the working 1990 script where it has the curse break, everyone’s crying and hugging each other or mystified at being human again. Belle and the prince don’t even exchange a word she just watches this all go down “what’s happening”
AND THEN IT ENDS
There’s the level of angst and joy and tears of 2017 but the poor girl gets no kiss and no context it just ends. I can’t breathe.
Ok so maybe I’m a little crazy… does anyone know if the 2017 table read is worth it? 👉👈 it’s a part of my Blu-ray — and I mean a lot of the interviews have been great
Gaston is such an interesting figure, as he’s so outwardly a brute but at the same time thoughtful in his outward social status. He has a good reputation, he’s a masterful hunter, a local business owner (of the pub no less- a social center of the village he can center on himself) and quite handsome. He uses and abuses his reputation to the point most ignore or play off his callow nature. He provides and he’s good looking who cares?
He also provides outward social niceties, despite how deeply deeply self centered the man is he still says things like “Please let me through,” in the opening number. I don’t know why but I’m spinning that in my mind. This is also why I like the addition of making him a captain in 2017– it’s another layer of reputation and good standing to use and hide behind.
Something something he does actual good in the community which allows for unchecked ego, villainy and abuse to go absolutely unchecked — I’m lacking the proper way to describe it. Like he’s not complex at all but at the same time there are layers to his standing.

One of the most striking moments for me is when Gaston gives Belle the ultimatum- marriage or her father goes to the asylum. It’s Belle’s “What?” And the brittle sound of her voice— for as poorly and exact as she views Gaston she did not think him capable of stooping to such a level.
It’s how even in his selfish, conceited nature she knows him capable of she still sought or believed goodness in him. Or at least— she knew him to be upstanding in the community even for her own dislike of him.
Something about how it comes as a shock, almost betrayal to her…
Ok so it’s not in passing I think I’m fully back into Beauty and the Beast and absolutely losing my mind about it. Lots of stuff coming still, once I get drafts done
Analysis, art, ramblings and fics eventually.. I’m also open for rp, chatting etc.
Hopefully I stop prefacing all my stuff for the fandom after this lmao I promise
