The original Statue of Liberty was chained.
When Bartholdi created the first model, the statue’s hands were holding broken chains to signify the end of slavery. American financiers were not too keen on the idea, so Bartholdi replaced the chains with a tablet.
Bartholdi, however, left broken chains at the feet of Lady Liberty to remind us of our freedom from oppression and servitude. These chains cannot be seen by visitors, since they sit atop the pedestal, but they can be seen from an aerial view.

Monument Mythos AU where [SPOILER WARNING] George Washington retains his sanity
OK so: Imagine if George Washington hadn’t been driven completely insane by being turned into the Horned Serpent through exposure to the Special Trees’ home dimension. Like, he’s still a person on the inside. And Grant still locks him up in the Statue Of Liberty and tries to feed him dismembered immigrants under the belief that human sacrifice is necessary to appease Hanodaganears, Devourer Of Villages. We know he can get into Ferdinand de Lesseps’ dreams from LIBERTYLURKERS. What if he was just making conversation with Ferdinand, and at one point idly threw the idea out there for a canal in Egypt connecting East and West?
This AU was inspired by an awesome piece of art by wakessss, here’s the link: https://wakessss.tumblr.com/post/674003635762593792
