Was talking to @serregon about this but just thinking once more about how Morwen has been traumatized since she was Turinâs age when he left (or about that, she was a year or so older), her own father dies as an exile in a massacre, sheâs watching HĂșrinâs people including close friends like Aerin go through what many of hers did; invasion and violence and exile and so much of what we know of her childhood mirrors what will happen to turin before heâs ten and NiĂ«nor is living as Morwenâs father died, as a stranger and almost prisoner in the land heâs born in

three houses of the edain ⟠house of bĂ«or ⟠headcanon disclaimer
Baragund and Belegund were the sons of Bregolas of Ladros. When their father fell in the Dagor Bragollach, they remained in Dorthonion to fight the Enemy alongside their uncle Barahir, though they sent away their own young families to safer lands. Their elder sister, Beleth, guarded over their children along the perilous journey, as both Baragundâs wife and Belegundâs husband perished in battle before they could escape.
In happier times, Baragund had wed Reniel, the youngest daughter of a large family who secretly resisted the role of âgentle maidenâ that was expected of her. Baragund discovered the fierceness that lay within her and encouraged her to learn the sword, coaching her into becoming a fearsome warrior. Reniel took the name Angren, the Grinning Maw, for she rushed into battle against orcs with wild laughter and delight in the freedom she had achieved for herself. Angren passed her stubborn independence and firm will onto her only child, Morwen. Angren fought valiantly to her death, refusing to abandon her husband and homeland, and was slain in a burst of dragonfire.
Belegund was similar to his brother in many ways, but he chose a very different partner for his life. He married Redoron, a kind and practical fisherman who bore him two children, RĂan and Orlin. RĂan adored her elder cousin Morwen, who enjoyed having someone to order around, and as they grew they became fast friends just like their fathers. Little Orlin was only a year old when the Sudden Flame descended upon the place of his birth, and was raised mostly by RĂan and his aunt Beleth, never truly knowing his fathers. Redoron was no warrior, but he held the rearguard of his fleeing people, and was killed by an orc just before they crossed the Mountains of Shadow into the relative safety of Hithlum.
Even as Baragund and Belegund joined Barahirâs band of outlaws, their children settled into a new home in Dor-lĂłmin, welcomed and sheltered by the House of Hador. Indeed, both their daughters would wed lords of that House, bearing sons whose great deeds would shape the fate of Arda. But Orlin, the son of Belegund, grew into a shy young man who never claimed the leadership that could have passed to him after the destruction of the rest of his family; only when he saw his home conquered a second time in the aftermath of the NĂrnaeth did he harden his resolve and nurse a secret anger against the Incomers who ruled over him in cruelty. Upon the return of Morwenâs son TĂșrin to Dor-lĂłmin, threatening violence against any who would stand in his way, Orlin stepped forth to confront his cousinâs child, but TĂșrin struck him down in blind rage without any regard for their long-forgotten kinship.

Beleth was the first child and only daughter of Bregolas. She had two younger brothers called Baragund and Belegund. She is only mentioned in a footnote of the Unfinished Tales as the ancestor of Erendis.
Flora, fauna, geography and environment of Arda Masterlist
Dorthonion was a region north of greater Beleriand. It was a cool region covered in steep slopes, conifer forests and Heath covered highlands. The mountain range Ered Gorgoroth bordered it on the south and above it was the fields of Ard Galen. It was inhabited by the Arafinwëan host following Aegnor and Angrod and later, the human host following Bëor. Nomadic and semi nomadic groups of the northern Sindar and Avari also possibly lived there
As always I included world building notes at the end so itâs not just a list of species
In the conifer forests: black grouse, willow tit, goldcrest, mistle thrush, pine grossbeak, common tree creeper, common redstart, black woodpecker, chiffchaff, coal tit, common raven, crested tit, wood grouse, goshawk, spruce grouse, black throated thrush, pine bunting, boreal owl
The highlands and around Tarn Aeulin: graylag goose, common nightjar, common kestrel, snow crane, hen harrier, tundra swan, horned grebe, common crane, blue duck, water rail, black francolin, northern pintail, velvet scooter, great bittern, pallid harrier, rough legged hawk, little egret, wood lark, corn crane, black necked grebe (migratory), garganey, Merlin
The cliffs and slopes: see see partridge, rock dove, great bustard, long legged buzzard, common quail, black headed bunting, booted eagle, chukard, barred warbler, northern wren, little owl, white throated dipper (near Rivilâs well), black winged kite, steppe eagle, roller
The mountain border: bearded vulture, red fronted serin, black stork, snowcock, horned lark, rock bunting, wallcreeper, blue rock thrush, red kite, peregrine falcon, golden eagle (rare), white wagtail
World building notes:
-The vague images of pine grossbeaks were embroidered on the blankets of Bëorian children using a diluted version of the dyes created from blood madder and coal. The name in Bëorian Taliska translates to pine song bird.
-The Arafinwëan host of Dorthonion as well as some of the Avarin groups hunt with birds of prey which are also used by some of the scouts. Kestrels and Harriers are the most commonly used species. The practice is less common than among the Noldor of Eastern Beleriand however.
-Feathers (usually of peregrine falcons or common kestrels) were also used as a method of communication among Arafinwëan scouts during the times of year where weather would allow for this, left in strategic locations, lodged into the earth or tucked into trees to indicate presence or dangers.
-Eggs of various ground species were eaten by the Bëorian population and there was a practice of burying the eggshells. This was learned from the elves of Ossiriand prior to their settling in Dorthonion.
-Birds eggs appear in Northern Sindar art, in or separate from nests. Though the eggs of certain species have different meanings, they are commonly associated more generally with fragility and defense. Their images may be created through pigments made from certain actual eggshells as well as minerals and plant based dyes. One common motif involves a nest of eggs upon a steep slope or cliff.
-Birds appear throughout BĂ«orian songs and poems. Most commonly mentioned are the general name for the âfisher birdsâ (wading and diving birds) seen on and around Tarn Aeulin, as well as several of the smaller songbirds found in the pine forests such as pine grosbeak, tree creepers, and thrushes. After the Bragollach the names for some species became lost or translated differently.
-Also itâs been a headcanon of mine for awhile that Baragund would take Morwen when she was a young child out to the cliffs to watch the birds. He would teach her to identify them by their call. She remembers a lot of them, even as an adult though they are called different names and their habits are often unfamiliar.
From this headcanon ask game here! Still accepting them
-Morwen didnât speak until she was five or six years old. She responded inconsistently to speech from others.
-She bit Beren once when she was four and he was babysitting, hard enough that he screamed. (Beren had picked her up when she was playing with scrolls of parchment in her parents room and she was not happy about being moved suddenly).
-Very young Morwen loved to pick the seals off of scrolls. Baragund would often unseal the scroll, read it and then reseal it so his daughter could pick it off without the risk of her damaging the paper before it could be read. ïżŒ
-Morwen is very good at arithmetic and enjoyed counting games. Her parents would quiz her on sums and problems and she loved to show off this.
On that note, my math headcanons for the rest of her family are: HĂșrin is good when heâs actually trying but heâs prone to wild guessing when heâs not, Aerin is good but double and triple checks herself so she can be a bit slow, TĂșrin is prone to getting easily frustrated and giving up on a calculation but his actual skill is high. NiĂ«nor had lots of time to practice as a child and is very good.
-Baragund is fairly short compared to other BĂ«orian men and Morwen, like RĂan, was a very small child. It wasnât until her last two growth spurts in her early and mid teens that she got much taller. RĂan hoped this would happen to her too but alas she remained tiny.
-Aerin was among her first friends in Hithlum, one of the first people she became loyal to
-Morwen doesnât speak much about her childhood in Dorthonion and she doesnât really talk at all about her time in Brethil (Iâve written before about how I infer that her time there was not enjoyable and was possibly traumatic, beyond just the obvious post Bragollach and relocation trauma). I think she can be a bit brusque* when HĂșrin is talking about his mostly positive memories of Brethil. Itâs a source of minor contention.
*look I know Morwen is often brusque but like, even more than usual
-The ways she remembers and preserves BĂ«orian customs tend to be through actions rather than sharing of memories. She never stops speaking BĂ«orian Taliska, even after RĂan is gone. (I have more about this specifically and the ways Morwen adjusts, and doesnât adjust to Hithlum in other posts!)
-Her reputation for being proud and stern began well before adulthood.
-Morwen would consistently refuse help or even company from most people in Hithlum as a teenager and she very rarely smiled. There were definitely those who saw her refusal to assimilate to Hadorian culture as pride in the most negative sense.*Those who did become close to her know Morwen as fiercely loyal to her loved ones
*Morwenâs refusal to assimilate is related to her pride but I donât see this as negative about her at all. She is holding a monumental burden, trying to maintain her culture, language and traditions after catastrophic destruction and she is almost entirely alone in it. Iâm not good at wording things about this but it is so important to me. Her pride and grief and pain are all so important to me
Thank you so much for the ask! I love Morwen very much and I hope this is ok!
