Banarasi cloth or sari is made from a special type of silk weaving from Varanasi, India. The saris are among the finest and most expensive saris in India and are known for their gold and silver brocade or zari, fine silk and opulent embroidery. The saris are made of finely woven silk and are decorated with intricate design, and, because of these engravings, are relatively heavy.
The traditional Banarasi sari is done with cottage industry for about 1.2 million people associated directly or indirectly with the hand loom silk industry of the region around Varanasi. Banarasi saris are adorned with intricate designs and zari embellishments making it popular during traditional functions and weddings. Earlier, the embroidery on sarees were often done with threads of pure gold, with intricate intertwining of floral and foliate motifs, a string of upright leaves called jhallar at the outer, edge of border is a characteristic of these saris. Compact weaving, figures with small details and metallic visual effects are also common. Depending on the intricacy of its designs and patterns, a sari can take from 15 days to a month and sometimes up to six months to complete. Banarasi saris are worn by Indian women on important occasions such as when attending a wedding and are expected to be complemented by the woman's best jewelry.

how not to ruin your banarasi (a shopkeeper begs you)
a good banarasi should outlive many festive seasons. most get wrecked at home instead. save this:
never machine wash. dry clean only, and tell them it is silk with zari. never iron zari flat on high heat. press cool from the reverse with a cotton cloth over the gold. wrap it in muslin or cotton, never plastic. silk needs to breathe. refold a different way every few months so the crease does not split the silk. do not spray perfume straight on it. dress first, scent yourself, saree last.
quantity cheat sheet: saree 5.5m plus blouse (about 6.3m), lehenga skirt 3m, suit 2.5 to 3m.
treat it kind and one banarasi becomes the piece your family keeps.
shop banarasi → banarasi brocade festive sarees → saree range how much → fabric estimator wedding looks → lehenga range for boutiques → wholesale
