My Favorite Games I Played This Year!
(in no particular order. includes any games I played/finished for the first time this year, idgaf when they came out)
In Stars and Time
A simple but great little turn based RPG about time loops, isolation, and loss. I think it strikes a good balance between making you feel Siffrin’s frustration at the repetition and having nice quality of life. My favorite french RPG that I played this year! (I played no other french rpgs this year. were there any? the world may never know) There’s secret croissant lore! Great game.
Donkey Kong Bananza
Not a lot to say, a really solid platforming and breaking stuff game. It’s just really fun the whole way through and has a banger of an ending. The story is absolutely nothing to write home about, but getting a banana and hearing the “OHHHH BANANA!” scratches an itch in the primordial part of my monkey brain.
1000xResist
“Is there a feeling worth being incinerated over?” Perhaps the philosophical opposite of Bananza, 1000xResist is a story first and a game fourth. But what a story. Lots of middling YA stories have put forward “What if the future of humanity rested on the shoulders of one teenage girl?” 1000xResist says “Yeah? What if? Sounds bad!” It hits on revolution, generational trauma, diaspora, police brutality, identity, memory, and a whole lot more. It’s a game that remains and remains and remains.
Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn
Together with Path of Radiance, this is the best story Fire Emblem has ever told. And it is not close. The difficulty is harsh (the difficulties are also mistranslated! Normal is actually Hard; Easy is actually Normal) but it’s also really rewarding to make it through. I might be spoiled on other FE games because I think they haven’t done it this well since (and might not ever, these games did not sell well).
