Lovely big bunch on our Lady Finger Bananas (Musa acuminata × balbisiana Colla (AAB Group) cv. 'Pome') Tho Lady Fingers are really fruiting well. This is one of the biggest bunches I have seen for a while. It weighs in at 23.5 kilograms or about 50 pounds. In Australia, the name 'lady finger banana' refers to the 'Pacha Nadan'. They are small, thin skinned, and sweet. The first hand I cut off weighs 3.7kg or 3 lb 14oz. Mostly my plants rely on rainfall and I also don’t fertilise. When the bunch starts to ripen I cut it and hang it somewhere safe. Banana flowers make a good salad but I have not yet learned how to get the bitter taste out. They are easy to propagate from suckers. Mostly my plants rely on rainfall and I also don’t fertilise. I cover the bunch and also remove the flower when it’s no longer making fruit. If I don’t cover the fruit it’s fair game for Flying Foxes, Possums, King Parrots and bush rats. When the bunch starts to ripen I cut it and hang it somewhere safe.
