𝓴atsuki bakugo wasn’t well known for his patience and easy going demeanor. he was usually brash and abrasive, but today was different.
he was deep into an explanation of advanced trigonometry and its functions or whatever. his voice was lowered a few octaves, almost as if he was whispering. he made sure to keep it low so that the idiots in the common area wouldn’t be drawn to his room.
“…and if you don’t find the common denominator before you isolate the variable, the whole equation goes to shit. basic logic, nothing hard. look at the third step here. see how it flips?”
you’re across from him, eyes dropping shut. you murmur a ‘mhm,’ elbow propped on the table with your chin resting in your palm.
“…so the cosine is going to dictate the curve on the graph…you got it?” when the only response he gets is a soft, even breath, katsuki looks up from his paper. his ruby red eyes narrowed as he took in the sight of you. you had your hand further up on your face, face completely relaxed in a sleeping state.
“unbelievable.” he muttered, setting his pen down on the desk. katsuki stared at you, genuinely confused and exasperated. he never understood you. he was the least calming person in all of U.A. High, yet here you were, snoring on your homework in front of him. the blonde leaned back in his seat and crossed his arms.
“this is why you can’t keep your damn grades up.”
katsuki told himself he should wake you up. he should snap his fingers in your face or grab your shoulders and shake you. instead, he just sat there in the quiet ambience of his room. his tightened eyebrows loosened as his eyes grazed over your expression. without the stress of classes or training, you looked genuinely peaceful. you were all over the place usually, but this was a nice sight.
a stray lock of hair fell across your cheek and he stared at it for a few seconds. he clicked his tongue and reached to tuck the pesky strand behind your ear. his warm fingertips brushed your skin and you stirred, but didn’t wake up.
when he realized what he had done, he sucked his teeth and looked away. “fuck, you’re turning me into a sappy sack of shit.” he mumbled, finger scratching at his arm. a knock at his door made him jolt upwards.
katsuki growled and got up from his chair. he tore the door open with a little bit of force. “what.”
kirishima stood in the hallway. “hey, bakugo! have you seen y/n—“
“keep your voice down.” katsuki cut him off, his voice hushed in a whisper. “oh! sorry.” kirishima said apologetically. “…do y’know where—“ katsuki opened the door a little more, revealing a now snoring you to his friend.
“dude,” kirishima snorted. “ your tutoring session was that boring?”
the blonde rolls his eyes, heat creeping up his neck embarrassingly. “shut the hell up. what’dyou want?”
“oh, mina’s gonna order some takeout and sent me to ask her what she wanted.”
with a sigh, katsuki told kirishima what you usually order when they get takeout and sends him back to the common room after telling him you’d be down when you finished this assignment. he turned back into his room after shutting the door and walked back to the desk. “you get ten more minutes of peace, you idiot.” he uttered, taking his phone out to set a timer.

Collective gasps ripple through the training grounds. Your classmates stare intensely at Aizawa-sensei, who’d just told everyone that the school was sponsoring a final trip for the third years at U.A. High.
“Wait seriously?” Kaminari chirped.
Hagakure squealed. “I can’t believe it!” You could tell she was holding onto Uraraka with how the brunette was stumbling in place. Sero pumps a fist in the air. “Cool! This is gonna be awesome!”
Bakugo rolls his eyes. “You extras act like you’ve never seen sand and water before.”
“You act like youve never had fun before…” Kaminari shot back, eyeing the blonde.
“Wanna die?”
“NO?”
“It’s a four day trip to Oshima Island.” Aizawa continued, ignoring the interruptions. “The resort area is cleared for all third year students attending. You’ll leave tomorrow morning by bus. Go back to your dorms, pack light, and don’t make me regret approving this.” His deadpanned expression remained the same when an eruption of excited cheers came from your friends.
“A beachy island trip!” Mina jumped up and down. “Oh, we have to go shopping for some clothes!” She grabs your arm and you offer a bashful smile.
“It’s only four days.” You squint at her.
Mina hushed you. “Four days to look amazing!!”
By 7 pm, you were dead on your damn feet. The mall was packed with other third years from U.A. that were also doing some last minute shopping, so it seemed Mina wasn’t the only one wanting to dress up fashionably for the short trip. When you girls got back, everyone started to lock themselves in their rooms so they could pack.
You filled your small suitcase up with some of the new outfits you had bought earlier along with some old ones you were fond of.
A knock at your door made you twist your head.
“It’s open!” You say, making sure you’re loud enough.
The door creaks open and you see Uraraka poking her head through.
“Hey, you uh—texted me?” She held her phone up, tilting it in her index finger and thumb. You nod, ushering her inside. Uraraka shuffles in and shuts the door behind her.
You take a deep breath and drop your shoulders. “I need your help…” You murmur, looking back at your neatly packed suitcase.
Uraraka tilts her head, her expression instantly shifting from curious to concerned given your demeanor. She walked over to your bed, sitting down on the edge of the mattress. “Is this…about Bakugo?” she asked gently.
Your eyebrows crease. “How’d you know that?”
Uraraka offered a soft, sympathetic smile. “Well, you only ever look this stressed when it involves him. Plus, Mina’s not too good on keeping things on the down low.”
You groan and plop in a spot on your bed beside her. “I just…” you let out an exhausted sigh. “I feel like I’m running out of time here. I mean, graduation’s around the corner…” you run a hand through your hair. “and once we leave U.A., everyone is going to be scattered at different agencies. He’s already so focused on being the number one hero, and he’s made it clear he doesn’t care about romance. I feel like this trip is my absolute last chance to tell him, but I’m terrified.”
You swallow and look up at Uraraka. “I know how hard it was for you during our first and second years—with Midoriya and all.”
Her eyes soften up a title and she nods.
“I guess I wanted some advice on how to deal with this…” Most of the girls supported her during her trials and tribulations with her crush on Bakugo’s fated rival, but you knew she struggled with confessing. She tapped her fingers together, a subconscious habit whenever she thought deeply.
“Well it definitely wasn’t easy.” Uraraka admitted. “Honestly, there were so many times my heart felt like it was going to burst just from a glance or a pat on the back. Every time Deku did—every time he does something amazing, or every time he smiles at me…” she looked off to the side, as if she was still dealing with the underlying weight of not confessing to Midoriya.
“I can’t help but fall in love even more. But back then, I realized both of us had huge goals. I didn’t want my feelings to become a distraction for him…” Uraraka placed a warm hand over yours. “I think you and Bakugo are different, though...”
You scoffed and let out a light hearted laugh. “You heard what he said at dinner. There’s no way—“
She shook her head. “Bakugo says a lot of things to act tough, and he may act like he doesn’t care about you at all,” Uraraka said, her eyes sparking with determination. “But I also see how much he respects you. I mean, he lets you spar with him.”
“That doesn’t mean anything…he fought you in the Sports Festival.”
“Well, yeah, ‘cause he had to.” She retorts, then pokes your cheek. “He chooses to train with you.”
You sigh.
“Y/N, I really don’t want you to make the same mistake I did. You can’t just keep putting it off and watching him from a distance. If you don’t say anything at all before graduation, you might regret it later.” Her words hung in the room with meaning. You nodded firmly and pressed your lips into a line. “He’d be silly to turn you down, though. You’re amazing.”
“Thanks, Ochaco,” you said, a genuine smile finally breaking through your nerves.
“Anytime!” she beamed, lifting herself from the bed. “Now, get some sleep! We have a super early morning tomorrow, and Mina will probably drag you by your ankles if you’re not up in time.”
With a cheerful wave, she slipped out of your room and shut the door quietly behind her. You looked back at your suitcase, feeling a tiny spark of courage replace the dreadful feeling in your chest.
6:34 A.M — MUSUTAFU, JAPAN | U.A. COURTYARD
“Good morning everyone!” Iida’s voice boomed cross the courtyard. He was already standing at the bus’s doors, chopping his arms through the air.
Kaminari was yawning so wide his jaw looked like it was about to fall off. Bakugo pushed past him to get into the bus, visibly irritated by the early hour.
Iida stopped him before he could march up the stairs. “We have assigned seats, please wait for your name to be called with your bus seating partner.” Bakugo groaned. “Assigned seats, seriously?”
Mina bumped her shoulder against yours after she found you as you dragged your suitcase forward. “You ready?” She asked.
“Yeah,” you said, taking a deep breath.
“Quiet down and line up!” Iida shouted over the quiet chatter. He adjusted his glasses as Yaomomo stood tall at his side. She looked as if she had gotten the best sleep of her life. Her face card never declined.
“I will now announce the seating arrangements. When you hear your name, get with your parter and board immediately.” Iida said, a clipboard suddenly in his hand.
“Midoriya and Ojiro…Tsu and Uraraka…Mineta and Kaminari…Y/N and Bakugo…Ashido and Kirishima…” the list went on in a blur after you had heard your name alongside his.
You quickly looked at Mina and she shoved your shoulder harder this time. “Go!” She whispered gently.
Bakugo let out a grunt, but you didn’t dare look for his expression. You could only imagine his disappointment to find out he was seated with you of all people. However, he didn’t argue with Iida about it. He walked right past the class rep and stomped up the bus stairs, his boots echoing against the metal steps. You walked in behind him, clearing your throat quietly in case he spoke to you and you could answer without a voice crack.
Bakugo slid into the window seat, his legs cramped slightly in the tight space. Without giving you a single glance, he yanked a pair of black headphones over his ears, crossed his arms over his chest, and leaned his head back against the chair.
You lifted your small suitcase into the overhead bin, trying your best not to rattle it too loudly before you slipped into the aisle seat right next to him.
When Ashido walks down the aisle, she snickers and wiggles her fingers towards you. You playfully roll your eyes, glancing to the side to make sure Bakugo’s eyes were closed.
When the bus pulled off, a few whoops from your classmates made you smile.
About two hours into the ride, the sun was fully up, casting its bright warm glare through the glass. Bakugo shifted in his seat. That was probably the most he moved the entire time.
His shoulder brushed against yours as he reached down into his yellow backpack, digging around for a moment before pulling out a traditional, neatly wrapped cloth bento box. He untied the knot like he had done it a million times, revealing a perfectly packed breakfast. Rolled tamagoyaki, grilled salmon, and rice balls sprinkled with black sesame seeds. The scent made your stomach growl quietly, causing you to bring your hand to it and look away with embarrassment.
You bit your lip as it growled louder. You hoped to whatever god that existed he couldn’t hear it over the chatter of Kaminari and Sero combined with the bus's natural noises. Bakugo scoffed with a headshake before he snapped his wooden chopsticks apart. “You eat breakfast?”
The question lacked any real warmth, but the fact that he was even speaking to you directly made your pulse skip. “Uh, yeah,” you stammered, adjusting your posture after becoming aware of it. “I grabbed some…bread before we left the dorms.”
“Bread is garbage fuel, you idiot.” He popped a golden egg into his mouth and bit it in half. He swallowed before pointing the tip of the chopsticks toward the corner of his bento, where a few small rice balls sat. “Take one. I made too much anyway.”
Your eyes widened slightly and you parted your lips, but shut them. You knew better than to refuse him off the wake-up. “Thanks,” you murmured, carefully reaching over to take one of the rice balls.
You took a bite and chewed with a slow nod. “Wow, this is good—“
“‘Course it’s good. I don't make trash.” He huffs, a proud noise as he continues to eat.
You swallowed the rest of the rice ball. “You should open a restaurant or something when you’re older,” you say keeping your voice low enough. “You’d make a killing.”
Bakugo paused, a piece of ginger pork hovering between his chopsticks. For a second, you braced yourself for him to scoff at the suggestion, but he continued to eat. He raised his left hand and slid his black headphones completely off his ears, letting them rest around his neck.
“Maybe when I’m old and retired from hero work.” He shrugged. “Bet I’d still be more relevant than any of you with a restaurant of my own at 60 years old.”
You giggle, finding the comment pretty funny. “Should be a reservation-only spot. That’d make it less crowded, but classy in a way.”
“Exactly,” Bakugo grunted. He looked down at the last remaining rice ball in his bento. He tilted the box and jutted his chin upwards, signaling for you to take it.
“Oh, are you sure?” You hesitate, but he looks up at you with annoyance. You take the rice ball and smile nervously. “Thank you.” You popped it in your mouth and ate with a little sway.
Your phone buzzes in your pocket and you shuffle in your seat to grab it. When you turn the screen on, a message from Mina appears.
the queen 💖👽 : How’s sitting next to your future husband? 😏
the queen 💖👽 : You confess yet?
the queen 💖👽 : UMM ANSWER ME MRS. BAKUGO ??
Your heart did a violent drop into your stomach and you flipped your phone face-down against your thigh. You cleared your throat, hoping he didn’t see that. A cough escapes you and you bring your hand to cover your mouth.
“The hell’s wrong with you?” Bakugo’s eyes narrowed and he fixed his suspicious gaze on you.
“Nothing!” you blurted. “Just swallowed wrong.”
You turned your head towards the aisle, refusing to look back in his direction. For the remainder of the bus ride, you kept your eyes glued to the opposite side of the vehicle, watching the passing trees and cars.
The charter bus finally hissed to a stop in front of the Oshima Island Ferry Stop. “Everyone please gather all of your personal belongings! Make sure you don’t forget anything, the ferry departs in exactly twenty minutes!”
Kaminari groaned and stretched his arms high above his head. “That drive was crazy long.” Sero nodded in agreement.
The air was much cleaner here. The moment you stepped off of the bus, there was a salty breeze that made everyone cheer with excitement. The port was bustling with U.A. High third years as they greeted each other after getting off of their buses.
“Well, well! If it isn’t our favorite class!” Monoma teetered mockingly, but it had no real bite. Kendo rolled her eyes beside him, but smiling all the while.
You remembered his significance during the war, and how much everyone had went through. It brought you all together and pulled you guys closer to one another, so Monoma’s behavior towards your class shifted drastically.
Kendo waved at you and your class. “Did you guys have a good ride over?”
You shrugged. “For the most part.”
Tetsutetsu yelled from a few paces back, his voice loud over the chatter. “CLASS A!!” He immediately ran over to Kirishima, the two of them locking hands in a manly greeting. “Man, I can’t believe we’re actually here! An island vacation!”
“Yeah! It’s gonna be great!” Kirishima said with a nod.
“Alright, line up.” Aizawai’s tired voice cut through. He was standing near the boarding ramp alongside Vlad King, looking like he wanted to go home already. Everyone dispersed to their lines excitedly. You looked around to see if you could find Mina or Uraraka. While walking forward, you bumped into a large figure.
“Oops-“ you grunt, looking up. “Sorry about that.”
Mezo Shoji shakes his head. “It’s alright.” He says.
You stay in line and eventually, Uraraka finds you. She taps your shoulder and smiles sweetly. “So you survived sitting next to him, huh?” She teases.
“Barely.” You joke. “But we actually talked. Like…a normal conversation.”
Her eyes widened, a bright excited grin taking over her face. “Oh really? What did you guys talk about?”
Before you could answer, a voice called for Uraraka from afar.
Midoriya had his hand raised, ushering her over. She looked at you almost as if she needed your approval. “Girl, go.” You tell her, giggling under your breath.
Her face flushed a light pink but her smile only grew wider. “Okay, okay. Tell me everything the second when we get a chance to settle down” she promised, giving your arm a quick squeeze before she turned and jogged over to join Midoriya. You watched her go, a warm feeling in your chest. It was nice to see her so happy, especially after the conversation you two had shared the night before.
Eventually, the third years boarded the ferry, full of excitement and anticipation for the start of the trip to Oshima Island.

you walk into your bedroom, seeing katsuki sitting with his back facing you. he seemed to be doing something to his arm, or that’s what you assumed because he was looking down. he had lost his sense of sound during the final battle with shigaraki and all for one. still, it wasn’t something that was hard to manage around. he was still katsuki bakugo. his world as well as himself just became quieter.
you reached for the light switch and flickered it on and off so you wouldn’t startle him. katsuki’s shoulders twitched at the familiar signal that usually indicated you were in the room. he turned slightly, just enough for you to see the side of his face that was home to a scar on his cheek.
you stepped inside and shut the door. “what are you—“ you stopped yourself. stupid, he can’t hear. you sigh and shake your head. it was easy to forget the loud and abrasive man you fell in love with couldn’t hear or answer you back like he usually would given how much you’d constantly bicker back and forth.
you moved closer until you were sitting beside him on the bed. he was sitting on the edge, his shirt sleeve rolled up, fussing with a wrap on his forearm. it looked like he burned it again during training—the scar tissue there was always sensitive. you reached out and tapped his shoulder, then you signed. ‘hurt?’
his brow furrowed and he huffed out what might have been a laugh. it was just air, no sound. ‘no. fixing it’ he signed back with one hand. he was getting good at it.
you watched his fingers still fumble to try and wrap the bandages tightly, but they continued to come out loosely. watching him struggle silently made your heart ache. you bit your lip and let water fill your eyes. “stupid…stubborn brat can’t even ask for help.” you murmur.
of course, he didn’t hear you. the movement of your lips made him turn his head to see what you were saying, then he saw your eyes. his gaze softened and he shook his head. ‘you better not be crying because of me.’ he signed before he put his hands down.
you blinked rapidly and frantically held your hands up and shook them. ‘no, no i’m not.’ you insist.
‘i just love you.’ you sign.
katsuki stares at you. like really stares. you assume he can’t tell how hard he’s breathing because you can hear it. his heartbeat too. he raises his hands to sign, but drops them and leans forward to press his now pursed lips to yours.
you freeze for a moment, caught in the sudden tenderness of the gesture. his lips are naturally warm like every other part of his body. his hand finds the back of your neck and he pulls you closer into the kiss, making whiny/breathy noises he would usually suppress. he breaks the kiss and stares at you with nothing but love. this man LOVES you. and it’s clear he likes to show it rather than say it.
