Our Place (Bakara)

I don’t believe there is a single species living today that can understand the breadth of despair that falls upon a people when its young do not survive. The world exists for the young. That is the way of things—we are born, we grow old, we pass the flame on. Without the young, there is no future. And a world without a future is a world already in ruin. It cannot last forever. Hope slips from our fingers, replaced by the weight of unrelenting uncertainty and fear. It turns the world upside-down. How did we survive? The only thing I can say with certainty is that the drive to exist is strong. Beyond the tough exterior of each krogan is an even tougher interior. Sadly, yes, it is true that some weren’t able to hold on. Destruction of the self—gradual or otherwise—is a common reaction to feelings of futility. There has been a lot of change. More than just a change in our numbers! In the not distant past, we women attained power only through our usefulness as mothers. Our value was dependent on our ability to birth. Could we carry children? Could those children come to term? We were vessels, commodities to be hoarded and traded. That is why we chose to set ourselves apart from the men, for our own protection. Now that the genophage has been cured, I see a path forward together. To speak plainly: females and males need each other. Oh, maybe not for those reasons, but to grow our communities and our culture, for our traditions to continue, and to see the empire become more than a wasteland of war. Oh yes. With the balance of power shifting, I think it's inevitable that we'll have more mixed clans with female leaders. And within our lifetimes. [Laughs] Me? Perhaps. But there is a long road ahead first.
