Bad Preacher
A truck lovers that dreamt to be a part-time librarian and have his own old school Japanese car. His name B.P comes like thug life chose him. Got a chance to have short interview with him.
Tell us about yourself. Why do you choose the name “Bad Preacher”?
Hi Suluh, hmm, for the stuffs about me, just like I’m originally from the mountainous area of southern China, I got my transport and distribution empire (a metaphor of my design/illustration business, though gotta say I love trucks) in Beijing now, and I dreamt to be a part-time librarian and have my own old school Japanese car, listened to Nick Hakim when midnights come.
And for the reason why I come up with “Bad Preacher”, have you ever heard of the quote: “I didn't choose the thug life, the thug life chose me.” As the B.P comes like thug life for me in my life, that's how I get it. (Sneaky grin)
How did you get into visual art?
I draw lots of naïve stuffs when I was a kid, while the turning point for me would be the sophomore year of my university.(Gotta admit its quite late) I joined a website project which raised by my close friend, I’m the designer so I have to learn lots of stuff which not only includes drawing things on paper.
Some people call your style Noir, do you agree with that? Or do you have your own word/term to describe your style?
I specifically check the meaning of Noir, as I am not sure if the meaning of Noir stays the same in our mind, still can't response a simple yes/no with that kinda comment. While generally speaking, I think I understand the reason why people called it “Noir”, but if I would entitled my style, I will call it as “Bitter Flavored Truck Drivers’ Zen ” style.
Motion graphic, seems like you do it a lot and focus on it. Did you find some comfortable in that?
I think I can not only find comforts but possibilities and fun from those motion graphics. As I didn’t learn how to make them in school( my major was about human resources), so once when I found out the way that I could make them myself, the flow of passion just come up and still ablaze till now.
What project or work you liked most so far?
There’s one commission about drawing some original pokemons for GQ China, with each of the pokemon depicts different people that has bad habits in public place. It's the first time I draw something kawaii and colorful (most of pokemons are in bright colors) on a commission, that's quite a strange experience for me, but the result turn out to be, funny with a little bit of silly. So I like to show those pokemons to my friends and told them I’m the contributor then watch their facial expression says ”Hell no, I wont believe this”.
I’ve seen your works NIGHTRIDE with Arbour on vimeo. Tell us little bit about that. Will you make a series or just one video.
As I always spent lots of time on soundcloud everyday, by the time when I come up with the idea of NIGHTRIDE( the idea would result in the experience when I was a kid, my father pick me up with his Toyota Pickup then we start the safari on the evening mountain), then I come across with Arbour on soundcloud, I feel the chillness in some of his tunes and feels like them, which makes me wrote a msg to him, asking for his permission/supports, and received a positive reply. Theres more hidden gems on his page, go find them.
He sends me some hidden tracks and I feel like the single “Moonstone” is a perfect match with the first episode in the mountain tunnel area, then the animation video comes out with some bedroom efforts.
Yeah, as you can see I wrote episode 1 everywhere, which means I’ve already pick another song to be the bgm in the next episode, gotta be another chill ride in a different place.
Who influenced you most at making an artwork?
Sorry for I cant come up with a specific name, as I found its quite hard for people in this generation just influenced by a certain person/style, at least for me, I gather my inspiration from all kinds of medias and materials, then I found what I like and using my own way/brush to make them real/digitally existed.
How about creative scene in Beijing? Are you involved in it? Tell us little bit about creative scene in Beijing.
Well, as the things I did is kinda separated from the environment of where I am, so I regard myself as an outsider of the creative scene in Beijing. Gotta emphasis that my opinion is just based on people I recognized or rumors that I heard, as I won’t give the creative scene in Beijing a high score, as the tendency is like, not only many of my friend but some talented people I recognize, they got plans or already move to Shanghai, this is what’s happening in Beijing for a while.
