tbh i genuinely think we should have a conversation regarding strong amatonormativity in fandom in relation to the way people very aggressively tie familial relationships to any non-romantic bond. specifically, i am of the opinion that the long-loathed trend of going "they're siblings" "thats the group mom" "they're a Family" for unrelated characters is partially a defensive mechanism. i absolutely think that in some cases it roots from other things (ie, misogyny, the racist mammy trope, another thing i will mention later, etc). but i do think it is in decent part because people who don't want certain characters to be aggressively shipped into the ground have learned that any relationship that isn't "it'd be weird to ship them because it's basically incest" will not be respected as a relationship worthy of being its own thing. i don't think this is necessarily a conscious thing they realize! i dont think people know or realize they're doing this!
however... there's absolutely something to be said about familial bonds being the "only way" to explain characters being close without them being romantic. i think these things can co-exist. it all really comes down to a lack of respect for platonic or casual relationships imo.
