Just listened to Hilary Hahn’s 2018 Bach CD via her YouTube channel (very important, since this is her intellectual property, and I hope ad revenues are sent her way).
The precise fingering, clarity, and musicality are all the more striking. I have already heard a few select movements beforehand, particularly the Double from Bach’s Partita No. 1. The whole thing together brings the architecture of this astonishing music into full view.
Hahn is undoubtedly an outstanding performer of Bach, a composer whose works she has been playing since the age of 8.
A great performance of Bach’s Das musikalische Opfer (The Musical Offering) from the old Town House in Leipzig. Featuring: Barthold Kuijken - Traverso Sigiswald Kuijken - Violine Wieland Kuijken - Viola da gamba Robert Kohnen - Cembalo.
Bach’s Violin Partita No. 1 didn’t interest me as much as the others when I first heard it. I much preferred Partita No. 2 and Violin Sonata No. 1. On subsequent listens, I my mind completely changed. Bach’s writing in the key of B Minor has a special significance, and it sounds magnificent on the violin. BWV 1002 is played here by Shunske Sato for the Netherlands Bach Society.
2020 is the 300th anniversary of the completion of J.S. Bach's Sonatas and Partitas for Violin and Suites for Cello (BWV 1001-1012). And in my biased opinion, the viola is the perfect one instrument to perform all of these works!
Violist Scott Slapin performed all of Bach’s Violin Solos and Cello Suites on the viola in a bar. Great read!
