recently just renamed a shit ton of my games and apps so uh here they are
Arctic eggs 🤝 babbdi: low poly/pswhatever graphic games that aren’t necessarily horror, instead just surreal, strangely unsettling and slightly lonely experiences about doing things in a shitty town
You should all play babbdi btw
babbdi actually reminds me a lot of the disctrict i live in
this is literally just like the view from my window except i actually live on a lower floor
babbdi to me represents really well what it's like to live somewhere that wasn't created with the intention and care for people actually living there.
lots of abandoned construction because the urban developers couldn't give a fuck about cleaning shit up after 'completing' the project. which was probably delayed by a lot and people were getting mad because they took out loans to get an apartment in babbdi
a shitty little playground for what? 100s if not 1000s of apartments? yep thats very accurate. and the playground was only included in its bare essential cheapest form just to qualify for government building requirements. if they could urban developers would just build a building as tall as it can possibly be and a parking lot around it and then stack as much identical buildings as close to each other as possible to make more profit off of every square meter of land. yup thats pretty much it.
there's a lot of (relatively) children but none of them are on the playground because it just wasn't created with people using it in mind just like everything else here.
no school or kindergarten either so i suppose children would have to commute to get to school that is if they're even enrolled.
also notice the lack of any trees or greenery aside from a few bushes near that water cemetery thing. also a trademark feature of the 'modern apartment complex'. greenery doesn't serve any profitable purpose so there's no reason to plant trees (not that they would be able to thrive in these conditions anyways)
babbdi being in this isolated reservoir also speaks to me because often the absolute worst apartment complexes are built on isolated pieces of land with just one road leading out (which causes insane amounts of traffic obviously) and getting 'to civilization' so to speak takes money and effort. most people only leave for work or school and children don't get to leave at all so they're trapped in this concrete hell and have to somehow entertain themselves. this is why i feel so bad for all the children that grow up here because their parents couldn't afford anything else. most people who buy housing in these apartment complexes are actually young families.
often you will drive on the highway and see these giant apartment complexes rising out of the ground in the middle of nowhere. those places are disconnected from the outside world and have no infrastructure to support a human life. they're not built with the intention to support a human life. they're basically places for you to sleep after being stuck for 3 hours in heavy traffic after driving home from the city.
most apartments being empty is also true because not all apartments get sold and a lot of them stay empty until the owner finds someone to rent (usually poor people and immigrants who can't afford anything better or are even not allowed to rent in better districts)
a few things babbdi lacks is a lot of unnecessary fences around everything (for laundering money on the installation of fences) and a liquor shop/bar in every building
most secret items being cigarettes or liquor also speaks to me because obviously in these districts there isn't much for you to do except get drunk or smoke or do drugs. obviously there are no culture centers or any entertainment in babbdi aside from TV (what they did with the TVs was also pretty evocative i liked it)
the ai generated textures and signs do a really good job to convey that everything here was created without any care for the people that are going to be using it. cheap plastic clothes that aren't meant to last and aren't meant for any kind of self expression - basically just fabric for you to cover yourself with. nonsensical signs that nobody bothered to get right - if they satisfy governmental standards and serve their bare minimum purpose you don't need to do more. it portrays a complete lack of care for the inhabitants of babbdi. and there are many many more places like babbdi created with the same blueprint just to make profit off of the desire of every human to have shelter
