Cicadas feed on the roots of trees before they emerge from their multi-year "sleep" as nymphs. Their life cycles last from 1 to 17 years. The way the biology for many of them decides when its time to emerge seems to be based on a 4 year cycle which, in a way, aligns with the Noble 8 Fold Path from Buddhism. How that's written in Mongolian:
Nymph is the name of a life cycle stage many insects go through, but it's also the term for a (feminine) nature spirit.

But architect cicadas specifically build towers. Something no other cicadas are known to do. One reason speculated for this, is they needed to avoid a specific ant species that doesn't think to climb the towers, instead roaming the ground en masse to eat basically everything they come across.
But also, the towers give a reservoir of oxygen in case their source is blocked off. This relates well to how the observatory has oxygenated water. Also, these little towers improve soil quality, benefiting the roots they rely on.
This species also has a type of wing structure, called "nano pillars" that rupture bacteria that lands on it, making it highly antibacterial/sterile. However, they're susceptible to a fungus that causes the cicadas to act in ways that facilitate spread of the fungus.

i almost have the code for this stream points system done! I figure on Monday it'll be ready to test, and for an hour or so I'll stream the testing to make sure everything works before Wednesday's stream, where we'll hopefully be ready to use the stream points without any hiccups. Exciting!

Sometimes I get a little dreamy about Voyager and how things could have been for some people…
What if that Q who wanted to commit suicide had never died and had stayed on Voyager? I think he would have been a great contribution to the crew, besides providing some really funny moments…
What if Denara had been cured of phagia and had been integrated into the crew too? She and the Doctor could have developed a relationship…
What if Janeway and Chakotay had had more time on New Earth to develop a relationship and after that they could no longer run away from their love? They would have been the most perfect command couple in the Delta Quadrant and they certainly both would have been so happy!
What if, by some irony of fate, Seven could have met Axum again? They could have learned about humanity together and had a very comfortable and learning relationship.
And everything would have been in its place… I think I'm going to cry now.
Me and my romanticizing mania!
“It would be an irony, indeed, to find that Americans ‘discovered’ Europe many centuries before Europeans ‘discovered’ America. But the whole notion of any race (European, African, or American) discovered a full-blown civilization is absurd. Such notions should now be abandoned once and for all. They presume some innate superiority in the ‘discoverer’ and something inferior and barbaric in the people ‘discovered.’ These notions run through the works even of pioneers like Wiener, Cauvet and Jeffreys. What I have sought to prove is not that Africans ‘discovered’ America, but that they made contact on at least half a dozen occasions, two of which were culturally significant for Americans.” – Dr. Ivan Van Sertima, author of They Came Before Columbus: The African Presence in Ancient America
