Nicole Tung Receives 2026 IWMF Anja Niedringhaus Courage in Photojournalism Award
U.S. photojournalist wins prize after honorable mentions in 2025 and 2017

[JULY 7, 2026 â WASHINGTON, D.C.] â The International Womenâs Media Foundation (IWMF) today announced Nicole Tung as the winner of the organizationâs 12th annual Anja Niedringhaus Courage in Photojournalism Award. Tung is a veteran photojournalist whose work documents communities impacted by war and its aftermath, particularly across the Middle East. The Anja Award was created in 2014 to honor the life and work of Pulitzer Prize-winning German Associated Press photographer Anja Niedringhaus, who was killed while reporting in Afghanistan.
Tungâs winning submission narrates the human cost of war across 13 years in Syria and Ukraine, demonstrating the impact of violence on communities under continual assault. Documenting extreme destruction, mounting loss of life, and growing refugee communities, her work details how conflict tears apart bodies, families and communities. Following Tungâs honorable mentions in 2025 and 2017, this year marks the third time Tung has been recognized through the Anja Awards â a record for a single photojournalist.

I am deeply appreciative of the IWMF for continuing to support the belief that all voices need to be heard.â
Alongside Tung, this yearâs honorable mentions are Georgian photojournalist Daro Sulakauri, whose work combines investigative reporting and visual storytelling to examine social injustice and the lasting impact of conflict and occupation, and Viviana Peretti, a BogotĂĄ-based Italian documentary photographer working across analogue and digital media. Sulakauriâs multi-year submission, âChasing Shadows,â captures how hidden crimes in Georgia â including stolen babies and illegal adoptions â reverberate through identity, memory, and time. In âLimbo,â documented across more than a decade, Peretti demonstrates how forced disappearance in Colombia continues to wound families and nations. Like Tung, both women explore violence and absence â what was taken, what remains unresolved, and what must not be forgotten.
This yearâs Anja Award jury was chaired by Whitney Johnson Latorre and included renowned industry editors and photojournalists Corinne Dufka, Brent Lewis, Enric MartĂ, Benjamin Snyder, Sandra Stevenson, and Bernadette Tuazon, who reviewed 133 submissions from 49 countries.

Johanna Maria Fritz Receives 11th Annual Anja Niedringhaus Courage in Photojournalism Award

[September 15, 2025 â WASHINGTON, DC] â This morning the International Womenâs Media Foundation announced Johanna Maria Fritz as the 2025 recipient of the IWMF Anja Niedringhaus Courage in Photojournalism Award, which recognizes extraordinary bravery and dedication while reporting. Fritzâs winning portfolio captures life inside a Sudanese hospital amid one of the most severe humanitarian catastrophes in modern history. The Anja Award was created in 2014 to honor the life and work of Pulitzer Prize-winning German AP photographer Anja Niedringhaus, who was killed while reporting with the Associated Press in Afghanistan.
Fritzâs winning portfolio â âAl Naw: The Last Hospitalâ â depicts the deeply underreported story of civilians suffering from war-related violence inside one of the countryâs last functioning public hospitals, located in Omdurman. On the brink of destruction, Al Naw is both a shelter and lifeline, where doctors and volunteers work under harrowing conditions to increase patientsâ odds of survival. According to UNESCO, at least nine journalists have been killed in Sudan since this current conflict began and roughly 90 percent of the countryâs media infrastructure has been destroyed, displacing close to 1,000 journalists and creating information blackouts.
