Avezzano.
Waiting for an audience
What might seem like a posthumous Christo installation is simply the cathedral of Avezzano shrouded in scaffolding. The chair arrangement is for a big-screen viewing of a European championship match involving Italy to be shown in the evening. Leica Z2X on Rollei Superpan 200 B&W film.
Nearly every time that my best friend and I get drunk while video-chatting, we end up searching our photo collections and assorted Facebook albums for an old, long-lost, picture of the two of us on the archaeology dig where we first met, threatening each other (jokingly) with a pickax and a shovel. I’m certain at this point that it was posted on FB by someone else from the trip who has since deleted it.Â
It is, however, a nice exercise in nostalgia and a good way to rediscover some old gems from when I did fieldwork. Here’s the Cunicoli di Claudio, the Tunnels of Claudius, near Avezzano, Italy. The Roman tunnels cut nearly 4 miles through the heart of Mount Salviano to drain and control the levels of the Fucine Lake, a now-disappeared lake in central Italy. The lake had no natural drainage outlets and was prone to flooding the surrounding agricultural lands; though the tunnels clogged as maintenance decayed through the fall of the Roman Empire, they were eventually reopened and expanded in the early 1800s to drain the entire lake for good.

Continua a leggere
