Jason crouched outside the window waiting for her to finish packing. He nervously looked down to the first story windows for light. If her parents woke up now, the whole plan would be off. He couldn’t risk it. 

“Come on Ava,” He whispered, “We have to go now.” 

Jason felt fire, his entire body was ravenous. It had been weeks, he hadn’t had any chance to get a good hunt in, he had busy trying to fix this god-forsaken city. He didn’t realize how thirsty he was until he actually gave himself over to it. He scaled down the building, knowing there must be someone in the ally who deserved to die. Gotham’s lowest liked to hang out here by the clubs. 

Jason stood in the shadows, his mind focused on the scent. He could smell something...warm. He turned slightly watching the girl descend toward him. If he had been in his right mind he would have recognized her, he would have noticed that she was following him. 

Unfortunately he was not in his right mind. 

Jason sped through the streets, wearing only his domino. He was acutely aware of what day it was, which was why he was so worried. The last thing he needed was to hear that someone had kidnapped Ava. He couldn’t let that happen. 

This was his fault, they were too close. Anyone could see that, if someone wanted to get at him, they could use her. He had put her in a dangerous position. He couldn’t let her get hurt because of him. 

Pulling into the apartment complex, he scaled up the side of the building until coming to her balcony. The lights were dim and he couldn’t see through the curtains. He opened the door (she never kept it locked) and walked inside. “Ava? Are you here?” 

He had known it was a mistake when he had gone after the Joker alone, but he had always been the reckless one. Besides, he felt like he was proving it to himself and Bruce every day that he could handle the mantle of Robin. He knew that he had to be better, stronger, and smarter than Dick ever was.
