“You always have a choice.”

Barty turned completely, his right shoulder becoming perpendicular to the painting. “And you think that I wouldn’t have chosen you if I could've?” he let out before he could stop himself. Despite all the planning and all the strategizing, Barty’s pragmatic approach always seemed to falter when emotions were involved.

“I think that you didn’t.”

If Barty didn’t know Evan was angry before, he definitely knew it now. The way he tightened his jaw, pressing his molars into each other to swallow down something cruel and harsh.

“I think,” Evan started, “that you feel guilty and you’re using me to absolve yourself of that.” He took a step towards Barty, their faces less than two inches apart. “We had a decent friendship in the past, but that’s all we had.”
