Reflections from Kota Kita’s Participation in the Asia Urban Youth Assembly, Melaka, Malaysia
How do we integrate youth’s voices in city planning?
On March 25-28, 2017, Kota Kita had an amazing opportunity to participate in Asia Urban Youth Assembly (AUYA) 2017: “The Role of Youth in the New Urban Agenda-Taking Action for Innovation, Socially-Minded, Green Cities” which took place in Melaka City, Malaysia. The assembly was held in conjunction with 17th International on Melaka Twin Cities Convention 2017 with the cooperation from UN Habitat, Melaka City Council, Ministry of Youth and Sports of Malaysia, and World Assembly Youth. The Asia Urban Youth Assembly (AUYA) was a follow-up to the previous Asia Pacific Urban Youth Forum in Jakarta in 2015 and World Urban Youth Forum in Surabaya, 2016. There were presence of youth and activists from 22 countries across Asia and Africa discussing ideas and action plans so that they can make relevant contributions to the implementation of th New Urban Agenda and Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) in their respective countries
Sustainable Development Goals with a set of 17 Global Goals was globally launched in 2015 and it will help to orient development agenda to include more inclusive and socially just agenda for all. While, the New Urban Agenda was agreed upon at the Habitat III Conference in Quito, Ecuador last October and it aims to work in synergy with the SDGs to realise sustainable, safe, and inclusive cities around the world.
Kota Kita’s representative, Yunia Nursita Sari (Sita) presented in one of the sessions, entitled ‘A City For All: Integrating Youth Rights in City Planning’, sharing our experiences with the Urban Citizenship Academy (UCA) and the Urban Social Forum. These are the two platforms that Kota Kita initiated to improve youth participation for the making and improvement of Indonesian cities. Sita shared activism stories from the existing cohorts of participants of the Urban Citizenship Academy who came from 4 cities in Indonesia, including Solo, Yogya, Surabaya, and Bandung, and made up from more than 25 groups and 100 youth activists. UCA aims to improve youth ‘s knowledge and urban skills so they could participate in the community-led advocacy for inclusive and socially just city. Inherently, UCA also offers networks of young activists where sharing of knowledge and collaboration is highly encouraged; that way improve reach and impact of their activism. The Urban Citizenship Academy equips youth with practical skills and advocacy, readies them to be involved in pushing for better urban governance.
Kota Kita is happy to be a part of the Asia Urban Youth Assembly and we are gladly joining networks of youth-led organizations and activities and collaborating for actions to realize the global goals on the ground and make them relevant for cities in Indonesia. The long journey is ahead of us. Foll
The panel was facilitated by Ms. Ediola Pashollari from World Assembly Youth and it featured 5 speakers; Mrs. Kamariah binti Ibrahim, Director of Reseach and Development Division of the Federal Department of Town and Country Planning of Malaysia; Mr. Johan Arifin bin Mohd Ropi, Co-founder of Refinery Battery Johor Bahru; Dr. Ali Mohammed Mansour, Vice President Asian Youth Council of the University of Malaya; Mr. Richard Hamba, Director of TEENS Uganda; and Ms. Yunia Nursita Sari from Kota Kita Foundation, Indonesia.

Main Tarik Upih or Palm Frond Sledding is a popular traditional game in kampung areas (villages). Usually played as a race game on the ground but sometimes, to create more excitement, it is also played in paddy field 😊. . Palm Frond Sledding is reintroduced mostly played now during tele-matches, and we are lucky to get to experience (as a spectator 😉) this at Kampung Balik Bukit, Melaka recently. . #ICYDKMelaka #AUYA #GayaTravel #SamuraiWifi (at kampung balik bukit, tanjung kling, melaka)
