You may have noticed that the 'Autotweet on @prcofeed' check box on the press release 'Publish' screen is no longer there.

We have moved the setting from a per-pressrelease setting to a per-pressroom setting.

So, every press release published will have the pressroom's setting applied to it. The default setting for this is OFF. The autotweet function is only enabled if all of your previous press releases have been autotweeted.

The Way the NYTimes Promoted Their New Political Site and Newsletter

Smart way to promote a new section of the site: have the reporters each tweet about it. They each reach a different audience and that means many, many more people would see if than if the @nytimes account tweeted about it and no one else did. This is something we believe in on the social media desk: people connect with people more than with brands.

Also of note: When you click on the reporter’s name on each story within the NYTimes new political section, you’re taken to the reporter’s Twitter page. 

Promoting the NFL in China

Wright Bryan sends along this highlight from an article highlighting how businesses are trying to connect with Chinese audiences. 

Q. What kinds of adjustments do American companies have to make when they go into China?

A. I would tell every U.S. consumer product company: Your product will probably work in China, but not necessarily in the same way. You’ll need some diagnostics on your pricing and your selection and then probably need to do some engineering on how you merchandise your product. The N.F.L. has a very powerful brand, but it’s not powerful in China. The N.F.L. realizes it has to do a lot of outreach activity to explain the game, so the N.F.L. is heavily active in social media in China. One of our flagship stores is Totes, the umbrella and rainwear company. In the U.S., the brand is positioned as a very functional, utilitarian brand. In China, it’s much more of a premium brand, an umbrella you could easily give as a gift.

PRACTICAL ADVICE: Remember when to turn off Auto-Tweet

“I’ve just bought an iPhone,” Joan Rivers Facebooked and Instagrammed  on Friday morning.  Which wasn’t true: the comedian died three weeks ago. The tweet had been scheduled in advance. Remember when you have auto-tweet turned on: if you do, it’s fine — but if something comes up, make sure to turn it off.

Take it easy with robots on Twitter please. Do you know that if everyone is using these damn robot applications then no-one is ever going to be interacting with anyone. OK- I must confess to you that Twitter is currently the most powerful social network that I have ever known. I was initially fascinated with twitter because of a marked increase in visitors that I saw in my web statistics when I had been tweeting. Yes! I even wrote and showed people images of that happening in my own website but later on I kinda got sick to death of all you who follow me and use those cursed robots to ask me questions and reply to me. When will you guys ever take your twitter account off auto--pilot and try and engage someone the old fashioned way which is probably worth more than 10,000 tweets done by a robot.

So what is the future going to be like? Are we going to have robots do everything for us? Is my robot going to be programmed to speak to your robot? Will the robots become intelligent enough to the point where their contribution on the internet is much better than human content?
