Unlike Anselm Kiefer’s intimidating deep colours, Cy Twombly’s Quattro Stagioni: Autonno is very much different with his prominent use of white to represent light.

Quattro Stagioni (Four Seasons) is a cycle of four paintings representing the four seasons. Time, love, doomed desire and a prolonged unravelling are the themes. "Ah, it goes, is lost," he has scrawled in pencil on one of the four tall canvases that constitute his Quattro Stagioni. Though distinct and tasting of the different times of year - share a mood of decline, loss, consciousness of that which must pass.

Autonno is comprised of rich colours like the patches of deep reds and brown that blends together with smears of dark blue, violet and yellow. On the top left, stalks with berries come forth from a brown-black blotches. Including the stalks, round patches of red patches are extended towards the right, perhaps suggesting movement. Nevertheless, what it represents, it counterbalances the long verticals formed by drips. In addition to the colours, there are text In the painting. The most evident is the “Autunno” on top. Most of the text are too fragmented to be legible.

Both these paintings have a strong negative aspects to them. Kiefer’s painting had war, damaged land and prevailing evil attached to it, while Twombly’s theme was more about his personal emotions that he interpreted through the landscapes of his painting. However, overall their paintings had different interpretations to them.
