Drip Coffee Makers — super simple, super cheap
Another great video from Technology Connections, looking at how things work. The earlier electric kettle and percolator videos which are repeatedly referenced are well worth a look too.
(Bonus level from my mom, though: she started using this ancient metal electric percolator we had sitting around--which started out with one of my biodad's grandfathers, and might still be in working order for all I know--as a North American voltage kettle! They are basically the same appliance, after all, only with some removable extra coffee-brewing parts added in.)
Another video, btw, with some of the fairly simple tricks for possibly better results from drip machines he mentioned but didn't go into here. This one comes from James Hoffmann: Why Cheap Coffee Makers Suck (And How To Fix Them)
When we moved and were looking at new drip machines, I actually opted for one slightly higher end model which is basically an automated pourover brewer and is built differently in a few ways:
EXCLUSIVE! CoffeeGeek's got the first comprehensive look at the new Wilfa Performance Coffee Maker coming to North America this fall. It has
(Notably, the loud-ass water pump. Which is evidently quieter than in the previous model from this line which I was also considering then. 😒 Definitely pretty damned noisy compared to the simple bubble type pump used in most drip machines, as shown in the TC video. The convenient easily removable/cleanable water reservoir more than makes up for that to my mind, though.)
But, I am that kind of nerd--and also had more disposable funds available at the time than most people looking for a coffee machine.
