âMate, you alright?â Ron asked, a shine in his eye that told Harry he was several drinks deep. âYouâve been staring at Malfoy all night. Donât think heâs up to something, do you?âÂ
Harry frowned, shook his head.
âNo. JustâŠnothing,â Harry said, and Ron leaned toward him.Â
âYou havenât got a Marauderâs Map for the Ministry, do you?âÂ
âWhat? No, why?âÂ
âThought I might find you lying awake tonight watching Malfoyâs tiny footsteps like you used to do in sixth year.âÂ
âShut up. Itâs not like he lives there, anyway,â Harry said, elbowing him away.Â
Harry searched for Malfoy again, glimpsing blond hair as he disappeared around the corner, and Harry got up from his seat, then turned back, grabbing Ron by the arm.
âDonât ask why, but I need you to distract Nott for me.âÂ
âGross! I donât want to talk to himââÂ
âIâll buy your drinks next Friday. All of them. Please?âÂ
Ronâs eyebrows lifted, a glint in his eye as he stood up from his chair and wobbled a bit before he went toward Nott. Harry lingered at a nearby table for a long moment before he went to the bathroom. He pushed the door, his heart pounding, unsure of his intentions as he rounded the stall door and nudged it open.Â
Malfoy was there, leaning against the wall, arms crossed, head bowed. He looked up, timidly at first, but his expression shifted when he realised that it was Harry standing there. He straightened, arms hanging by his sides, mouth opening and shutting again.Â
âWaiting for someone?â Harry asked, and he braced his forearm on the door as Malfoy tried to push it shut.Â
âWhat is this?â Malfoy asked, his eyes going to the space behind Harry as if expecting someone to be there. âWhat do you want?âÂ
âI want to know why youâre hooking up with a prat like Theodore Nott. Have you no self-respect?â
âSelfâŠ?â Malfoy huffed, relenting his fight with the door as he stared at Harry in disbelief. âEven if that were true, it would be none of your business, would it?âÂ
Harryâs neck pricked, his heart skipping, eyes darting to the floor and back to Malfoyâs face as his alcohol-riddled brain tried to come up with an excuse.Â
âThe team is my business. It doesnât do well for training if people start hooking up with each other.âÂ
âOh? Well, I didnât see you put up an argument about Weasleyâs little bet regarding Finnegan and Thomas. Is your anti-sex clause only applicable to Slytherins?âÂ
âWellâthatâs different. They were always that wayâskirting around each other, even in school.âÂ
âSo what? Weâre all trainees. What difference does it make?âÂ
Harry swallowed, shrugged, glanced away again.Â
âIt doesnâtâI justâit doesnât matter. Theyâre not doing anything and neither should you.âÂ
âWho said I was? Did you hear something? Did someone say something to you?âÂ
He had stepped closer, his shoulders set, eyes narrowed and Harry felt the urge to step back but didnâtânot wanting to allow space for Malfoy to exit the stall.Â
âNobody said anything,â Harry said quickly, and Malfoy looked back and forth between his eyes, stance not easing.Â
âThen why would you think I was waiting to meetâ someone in here?âÂ
Harry shrugged, leaned his other arm against the wall nearest, blocking Malfoy in.
âWell, Iâm not blind. IâŠsaw you come in here just after him last week.âÂ
âSo? Canât two people use the toilet at the same time? What are you, the piss police?âÂ
âAs the Lead Auror in training, I donât think itâs smart to sleep with your fellow trainees.âÂ
âWhy donât you go fuck yourself , if youâre so obsessed with all of it? Maybe it will keep your nose out of other peopleâs business,â Malfoy spat. âCan you move, or were you planning on climbing in here and seeing what all the fuss is about?âÂ
Harry let out a huff as Malfoy leaned back, folded his arms, rested his shoulder against the stall wall.Â
âI didnât think you and Nott were so close,â Malfoy said, lifting his chin, shaking his hair off his face. âThat must be how you found outâhe told you, didnât he?âÂ
âWhat? NoâIâI saw you follow him in.âÂ
âI donât believe you. Why would you notice where I go? Why would anyone?âÂ
âI keep tabs on the whole group. Itâs part of my job, isnât it?âÂ
Malfoyâs mouth quirked, his eyes dropping to Harryâs shoulder, then his chest. Suddenly Harryâs collar felt too tight, chest heating uncomfortably under his gaze.Â
âWhat I think is that you heard a rumour and came to see if it was true,â Malfoyâs eyes lingered on Harryâs belt for a long beat before he lifted his gaze again, shrugging. âIâm not as opposed as I once thought.âÂ
âOpposed? To what?âÂ
Malfoy didnât answer, taking a step closer.Â
âYouâve gotten better at duelling, you know?â Malfoy asked.
âIâm sorryâŠwas that a compliment you just gave me? I didnât think Iâd live to see the day.âÂ
âWell, youâre still not that great. Just better than before.âÂ
Harry huffed, his heart leaping when he felt Malfoyâs fingers at his shoulder, sliding up to adjust his collar.Â
âWhat is it you heard?â Malfoy asked, and Harryâs eyes found his mouth, unable to look away.
âHeard?â Harry whispered.Â
âWhat did he tell you?âÂ
âWho?âÂ
âYou came in here for a reason, didnât you? What is it?âÂ
Harry opened his mouth, shook his head, licked his lips.Â
âIâŠI donât know. To see if you were waiting for him, I guess. Like he did last time.âÂ
âAnd then what?â Malfoy asked, his hand flattening on Harryâs shoulder, sliding down to his chest.Â
âI didnât think that far ahead,â Harry murmured.
âYour lack of forethoughts hasnât changed, then.âÂ
His fingers pressed underneath Harryâs chin, lifting his face as Malfoy stared down at him. Harryâs breath shallowed, his heart pounding, blood rushing in his ears as he tried to figure out why exactly Malfoy had gotten so closeâwhy he was touching Harry at allâwhy he had that look on his face.Â
