Killdeer Patrol, June 17, 2023.
Our list of badges increases. We just were unexpected elevated to Killdeer Patrol. On a little walk, we saw a mama and daddy Killdeer. They were acting rather strange, and we saw to our left three little poofsābabies! But in the moment we saw them, a car rushed by, and one didnāt make it.
Or so we thought!
All three babies survived the car passing, but a very tall curb now separated them from mama and daddy. We felt badges pinned to our chest and we stepped into action to help all three babies avoid more cars, dangerous storm drains, and successfully reunite with mama and daddy safely away from all the dangers.
So glad we were in the right place at the right time, and our āKilldeer Patrolā badges looks pretty good next to our āSpring Peeper Patrolā ones.
so iām like mostly sure this little guy is fine now but iām not a bird expert
pretty sure heās a fledgling mockingbird (weāre in florida), little dude came up to my mom while she was resting in the garage and called me out for help. iām preeeeetty sure he hit his head because he was just standing there, barely reacted to us, and to be sure i gently poked him with the end of a bottle to see if heād react then (he didnāt)
we stayed out there until he started moving again, chirped, and then eventually hopped off, which is what i was hoping for. My mom also tell me that sheās seeing the adult mockingbirds that live here nearby
so again, iām pretty damn sure heās okay and we donāt need to interfere, but just in case, can anyone with any sort of expertise give their two cents?
Light pollution harms birds, but you can help! Pledge to go 'Lights Out' to help birds complete their migratory journeys successfully.
Every spring and fall, billions of birds migrate through the US, the majority of them flying at night, navigating with the night sky. This mass movement of birds must contend with a dramatically increasing but still largely unrecognized threat: light pollution.Ā An estimated one billion birds are killed annually from direct collisions with illuminated buildings, towers, and other structures across the country.
Light pollution harms birds, but you can help by:
Turning off spot lights and/or decorative lighting
Turning off interior lights when leaving a room or drawing blinds/shades
Using down-shielded lighting outdoors
Adding timers and/or motion sensors to outdoor lighting, whereĀ possible
Pledge to stand with Audubon as we call on building owners, managers, and homeowners to turn off excess lighting during the months of bird migration to help ensure birds have a safe passage between their nesting and wintering grounds.

I made limited edition prints of this one. I think only a couple are left.
