A little before work Milt Jackson from the Mo-Fi SACD âInvitation.â Backed by Kenny Dorham, Jimmy Heath, Tommy Flanagan, Ron Carter and Modern Jazz Quartet band mate Connie Kay, Jackson is in full flower here. This 1962 Riverside recording as remastered by Mobile Fidelity for this SACD release is clean, clear and full of tonality. Jacksonâs vibe work shimmers, Kayâs drums have snap, Carterâs bass is detailed and woody, Flanaganâs piano is portrayed as full sized (even if itâs confined to the left channel only. And the two horns, Dorhamâs trumpet and Heathâs tenor sound appropriately real. But as good as the sound is, it takes a backseat to the music, which, since this is a Milt Jackson session, swings even when it shouldnât. Jackson canât help himself, everything he does swings, even if just a little (like his version of Thelonious Monkâs âRuby, My Dear.â) It would be easy to overlook this session given all the work Jackson has committed to tape either solo or as part of the Modern Jazz Quartet, but that goodness Mo-Fi had the sense to reissue it. Now we can enjoy it in sound better than its ever had. If youâre a Milt Jackson fan, you WANT this disc. If youâre a jazz fan, you NEED this disc. And if youâre a music lover should be on the lookout for this disc. Very, very highly recommended. #SACD #digital #jazz #music #stereo #album #recordingmusic #recordingsession #recording #audio #audiophile #audiorecording
