Something a bit different than I usually do. Headphone jack broke off inside the Audio-Out socket. Jack in socket means the sound is getting routed away from the built-in speakers, and broken jack in socket means headphones can't be used either, so the keyboard was unplayable.
It's all chewed-up because the husband made an attempt before the wife brought it to me (there is a reason the industry refers to these kind of well-you-tried repair attempts as "dad fixes": it isn't always the men who do this, but most of the time it is the men who do this).
Opened up the outer shell and removed the circuit board to make the approach easier.
Inside a CT-1S Casio keyboard.
The circuit board. Damaged piece is the leftmost black cube-shaped bit at upper left.
Another view of the messed-up socket:
Did I win?
Hell yeah I did.
Approached it the same way I extract broken screws (grab it from the inside with a drill bit). The part that took longest was getting past the shredded plastic to find the jack itself in the first place. 3.5mm jacks are hollow, so I didn't even have to drill a pilot hole first. Once the bit grabbed enough that the plug carcass began spinning in the socket I twisted it until there was a piece sticking up far enough out of the hole that I could grab it with pliers and yank it out.
Bonus: I thought for sure the Audio-Out socket was going to be trashed after this, but it still works.
I don't want a slimmer and lighter phone, I want an audio jack!!
Need tech help!
Basic background: So the computer I play overwatch on was given to me by a friend. He took an old computer and rebuilt it, then upgraded the hell out of it and gave it to me for Christmas. Enough background, let me explain what’s going on:
There’s something wrong with the audio back on this thing. No, it’s definitely not my headphones, as I’ve tried five different headphones and earbuds on it. They all work fine when plugged into my phone, but my computer really screws with it:
Unless the cord is pulled down at a specific angle, the headphones either only work on one side or not at all. It takes me a solid few minutes to find the correct angle on this thing, and then I have to tie the cord to something heavy for it to work. Sometimes, even this won’t help and I only get one side working. I really want to participate in voice chats in overwatch, but it doesn’t seem to think I have a mic plugged in. Even if the mic is on the side of the headphones that is working, it ignores it. This computer doesn’t support Bluetooth, so I can’t do that.
If someone knows what’s going on, and if you know how to fix it, please help!
If anyone else is having a similar problem, please reblog until someone who knows what’s happening sees it and helps solve the problem.
Sorry for long post! (written on mobile so I apologize for any formatting issues)
