My Favorite (free) Plugins for Hip Hop Mix Production

What’s up my mixers! Hey, I wanted to drop in and give you the scoop on some (free) plugins that I use occasionally while mixing that really do a great job. My plugin stash is quite extensive…consisting of purchased plugs, plugs that came with my main daw (Cubase) and other audio production software, also plugs that came with my Focusrite interface and of course (selective) freeware.

A little while ago, I featured another distortion plugin: Softube’s Saturation Knob.

Saturation Knob can really add some warmth and character to otherwise dead sounding buses and channels. It’s a distortion plugin best used sparingly and needs to be pushed pretty hard before it gets nasty.

FuzzPlus3

FuzzPlus3 isn’t that type of distortion. FuzzPlus3 is a full on, balls to the wall thrash plugin.

While a free brutal distortion plugin would be welcome enough by itself, AudioDamage have been good enough to throw in a pre-distortion low pass filter and feedback. It even works in surround.

Anyone looking to distort a guitar sound will obviously benefit from FuzzPlus3 but it has some useful sound design capabilities as well.

For me, a lot of the action comes from the feedback. When it’s cranked right up, it’s interesting to slow a project right down so that the distortion can work on the space between the audio. It makes great material for resampling.

While we’re talking about Audio Damage, I may as well mention their free Rough Rider compressor.
