âHey guys,â Marjan called with a smile, adjusting the bag on her shoulder, having just assisted the Annihilators in defeating the opposing team for the third time. They were on a roll, and while Marjan knew they werenât actually unstoppable, it sure felt like it tonight.
She spotted Paul with TK, but her smile slipped when she didnât see Mateo.
âYou really kicked some ass out there tonight, Marj.â Paul grinned, taking a sip of his beer. Marjan thanked him, glad that they were able to make it to a match, especially one where her team had done so well. It was disappointing to not see Mateo there, especially since heâd told her heâd be there, and he definitely wasnât one to break his promises.
âWhereâs probie?â
âHe had a date with that girl, Angela tonight,â Paul said. âBet itâs going real good.â
TK made a sound beside him, making Marjan shift her gaze to him. Once he realized he had her attention, he said, âI donât think thatâs actually the case.â
âTK?â Marjan said impatiently, waiting for him to continue, shifting the bag on her shoulder.
âI knew heâd been nervous, and we all know he gets stuck in his own head sometimes. So I texted him a little while ago to check in.â TK glanced over at Paul, then back to Marjanâs expectant gaze. âI was messing with him during the date, and when he didnât say anything I asked him if he needed me to bail him out because it was going badly. He said âyeah right, that would mean Iâm actually on a dateâ.â
âWhat? That doesnât make any sense. Have you tried calling him?â
âHe didnât pick up when I tried him half an hour ago.â
âIâll try him,â Paul said, taking his phone out of his pocket and pulling up Mateoâs info, the phone ringing as he brought the phone up to his ear. He waited for a few seconds before he sighed, leaving a voicemail to have Mateo call him back when he got the message.
âHeâs been talking about this girl non-stop for a week. He basically has her profile memorized, telling me how right for each other they were after their first few dates.â Marjan frowned, running her hand over the back of her neck, fingers brushing against the bottom of her hijab. âYou still have keys to your dadâs place?â she asked TK.
âMarj, do you thinkââ
âShe either stood him up, or something went bad, really fast. Either way, heâs gotta be upset.â Marjan bit down on her bottom lip for a second. âI just need to check on him.â
âLetâs go,â TK said as they walked toward the exit, tossing their drinks out on the way.
Paul stopped halfway to his vehicle, looking at Marjan as she unlocked her car, TK hopping into the passenger seat. âCall me? Let me know if heâs alright or if thereâs anything I can do.â
âOf course. Iâll call you later,â Marjan said, tossing her bag into the back. She climbed into the driverâs seat, turning over the ignition, hoping that the way her stomach twisted with growing worry for Mateo was unnecessary.

TK opened the front door, letting Marjan into the seemingly empty house. Sheâd have thought that nobody was home if it werenât for Mateoâs car in the driveway. It was a little after ten, so it was possible that heâd just gone to bed early. Marjan hesitated in the doorway.
âCome on,â TK urged, walking towards the kitchen and noticing the [liquor cabinet] was open. TKâs mouth fell open a little, like he wanted to say something but he wasnât sure if he should.
âIâll go knock, see if heâs okay.â Marjan eyed the cabinet. âYou alright out here?â
âIâm fine.â TK said, offering her a reassuring smile. âPromise.â
Marjan took a deep breath, then knocked lightly on Mateoâs closed bedroom door. Although he didnât answer, she could hear the TV playing quietly on the other side, but nothing else. âProbie?â
She heard what sounded like a gasp or a sniffle, but she didnât feel right just going in uninvited.
âCan I come in?â She tried again.
âDo what you want,â Mateo said instead. Marjan took a steadying breath, then pushed open the door and while she wasnât sure what to expect, an array of takeout containers scattered across his bed wasnât it.
âCap is gonna have a fit when he sees all the GMOs youâve been eating.â Marjan left the door open a crack, her gaze settling on the liquor bottle that was positioned precariously at the corner of his night stand. âCan I sit down?â She motioned towards the bed.
Mateo shrugged, his focus not wavering from the television. His eyes were bloodshot, his hair ruffled. If she didnât know better sheâd think he hadnât slept or showered in days, like he was carrying the world on his shoulders. Mateoâs jaw tensed as he continued to watch the movie with great focus.
âWhatâre you watching?â Marjan cleared some of the containers from the bed, making space for herself beside her friend.
âI-I donât know,â Mateo answered distractedly, still not looking at her.
âHey,â Marjan said gently, taking the remote from his hands and muting the television, her forehead creasing more when he still didnât look at her. âMateo.â The use of his given name had the desired result, brown eyes filled with anger catching her gaze.
âWhat?â he snapped, then he visibly cringed, presumably as he realized she wasnât the one he was angry with. âIâsorry.â Mateoâs voice wobbled on the last word.
âWhat happened?â
âShe stood me up. Didnât even text or call to tell me,â he said, lowering his gaze to his hands. âWhen I tried to call her for the third time because I was worried that something happened to her, she answered her phoneâclearly annoyedâsaid I wasnât what she was looking for. And that I started to suffocate her after one date, which she said was a record.â
âMateoââ Marjan reached out for his shoulder, giving it a gentle squeeze, wanting to physically reassure him that none of this was on him.
âDonât.â Mateoâs anger crumbled, his expression turned to one of hurt, tears falling down his cheeks. âIâm always gonna be too much, or not enoughânot smart enough, or good looking enoughâtoo different to ever be the right guy.â
Marjan scooted over so she was sitting closer to him on the bed, opening her arms to him, hoping that heâd take the cue and let her comfort him. He didnât move right away, so instead she placed her hand on top of his.
âI know you canât see this right now because youâre angry and hurt, but youâre such a great guy. This is on her and not on you.â Marjan paused, her thumb rubbing over the back of his hand, watching as his jaw clenched and more tears rolled down his cheeks.
âYouâre more than enough,â Marjan said. âYouâre one of the greatest guys Iâve ever known, and that big heart of yours holds so much love for everyone you know. You dive into everything with your all. With your family, and your friends, at work when weâre on callsâand in relationships too. Someone is going to be so incredibly lucky to get all that you have to offer.â
Mateoâs body shook at her words, and she reached out for him, gently tugging him into her embrace. âShhh, itâs okay. Let it out,â she murmured.
âH-how did you knowâhow did you get in here?â Mateo managed between sniffles.
Marjanâs hand rubbed over his back soothingly. âTK said something was wrong. He still had a key and I wanted to check on you.â
âIâm sorry I ruined your night.â
âYou didnât ruin anything,â Marjan chided, though her tone was soft as she pressed a kiss to the top of his head. âI wish you wouldâve called one of us. You donât have to take on all this hurt alone. Iâm here for you. Weâre all here for you.â
âThank you,â he whispered, his body sagging against her, finally letting the tension bleed out.
âI know itâs late. You should go,â Mateo finally said.
âNo.â Marjan shook her head. âIâm not going anywhere.â
âOkay butâŚâ Mateo was quiet for a long time. âI never had dinner and Iâm kind of hungry, do you mind if we grab some food?â
Marjan laughed softly as she climbed off of the bed, Mateo sliding off of the opposite side as her. âWhatâre you in the mood for? Iâll cook.â
âItâs almost 11:30,â Mateo argued.
âProbie.â
Mateo held his hands up in surrender. âGrilled cheese would be great.â
Marjan nodded, grabbing the bottle of alcohol from his nightstand on her way to the door, hearing Mateoâs feet padding against the floor behind her. She set the bottle on the counter, then walked toward the living room. âHey Tââ Her sentence cut off as she felt Mateoâs hand cover her mouth.
âShhhh, heâs sleeping,â Mateo said. Marjan laughed as Mateoâs hand slipped away, and he skirted around her, walking over to TK and covering him with a throw blanket.
âYou know,â Marjan said, unable to stop the way that her lips curled up into a smile. âWe came here to take care of you.â
âWeâre family,â Mateo said when he was satisfied enough with how well heâd covered TK, walking back to where Marjan was pulling out the ingredients she needed for the grilled cheese, âand family takes care of each other.â
Marjan smiled, feeling the tension ease with the knowledge that he would be okay, because he was right. They had each other and no matter the circumstance, they could get through it, because they always had each other to lean on.
