However, near the end the author confronts our perception of what has previously been written. This temporary change of tone gives the reader license to, and expectation of, reviewing what the loss represents. At this point I thought the loss was writing related. Because of this temporary change I think The Friend would make a good #bookclub choice. People may have different ideas on the importance of this part. Also, the importance of names is a theme. To name something is to have dominion according to the narrarator, but to use someone's name is to start a foundation for communication.
