DEATH: Atai, Efik Goddess of Death

In the mythology of the Efik people in Nigeria, Atai encouraged her husband the creator god Abassi to make humanity and find us a place to live. Eventually, however, she realized that we also needed the gifts of chaos, conflict, and death - ways to find an end to a beautiful existent that could not last forever. At some point, we all must change. At her feet are the future ancestors, those who are able to transcend mortal life to become eternal protectors for their families.

Atai’s message for you is a difficult one, but it’s also inescapable. Your values with your spirituality, veganism, and BLM are so important. Personally, I happen to be a vegetarian, and I always desire compatibility with spirituality and BLM in a partner as well! However, Atai calls for transformation, a break with the past, new concepts of the world, renewal of the self, and rejection of the superfluous. The biggest obstacle in the way is a fear of change and differences from your hopes and expectations.

Love challenges us in all the best and worst kinds of ways. No matter what an ideal partner may be like or look like in our minds, the heart ultimately goes where it wants - sometimes transcending all kinds of boundaries we never thought were possible to cross. When this happens, our past expectations and limits die along with a former version of ourselves. You may be faced with a choice between the person in your heart and the ideal partner in your mind.
