BMW M3 CSL

BMW, whose name stands for Bayerische Motoren Werke ("Bavarian Motor Works"), was founded in 1916 as a manufacturer of aircraft engines. Its circular logo depicts the blue and white checkered flag of Bavaria, stylized as an airplane propeller.

The fourth generation BMW 3-Series (E46) was available in five body styles: 4-door sedan, touring, 3-door hatchback (Compact), coupe and convertible. The BMW M3 was only available in the last two of these, and stood out from the rest of the lineup with a bulging aluminum bonnet, flared wheel arches, front fender vents, aerodynamic bumpers, streamlined mirrors and forged 18-inch wheels.

The power plant was an inline 6-cylinder 24-valve S54 engine with a volume of 3246 cm3 and a power of 343 hp. (in the USA - 333 hp), which had six separate electronically controlled throttle valves and a VAMOS variable valve timing system.

The car was also equipped with a Getrag 6-speed manual transmission or SMG Drivelogic electro-hydraulic transmission with proprietary selector and paddle shifters, specially tuned Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), reinforced suspension and ventilated disc brakes.

In 2003, a limited edition (1,354 units) BMW M3 CSL was produced, named after the legendary 3.0 CSL model. It was offered in only two colors (Silver Gray Metallic and Black Sapphire Metallic) and was lightened as much as possible by a range of body panels (roof, bumpers, trunk lid) and internal elements (dashboard) made of carbon fiber, thinner rear window, fiberglass seats and lack of sound insulation.

In addition, the modification received 17 hp. a more powerful engine, revised suspension, brakes and steering and 19-inch BBS alloy wheels with Michelin Pilot Sport Cup tires. Since 2005, all this equipment can be ordered for the regular BMW M5 in the Competition Package.

Lighter and faster was only the road version of the BMW M3 GTR, built in small numbers for homologation in the American Le Mans series. It was equipped with a V8 dry sump racing engine with a volume of 3997 cm3 and a power of 350 hp. Sales of all variants of the BMW M3 (E46) 2000-2006 amounted to 85,744 units.
