Chap 15 - portion of a scene
He spoke a word to himself and the transformation occurred in a weave-infused moment. Now a bat, he attempted to fly in a clumsy flap with his grey arm-wings.
Squealing with delight, she reached her arm straight out for him to land.
He managed to grip onto her arm, and he swung up and tottered down to her hand, with an ungainly gait.
‘Astarion! I can’t believe it’s another thing you never told me!’ Beaming at him, her eyes sparkled with pure rapture, and she cried, ‘If there was any way I could love you more, than this would be it.’
If he had thought that turning into a scrawny, scratchy, half-fur, half-skin tiny creature, was a turn-on for her, he would have done it sooner. Although on considering her fixation on animals, he should have known she would react like this. ‘I can assure you, it is not a very appealing creature to turn into.’ He stood, and lifted his web wings, and he studied them. They were a whitish tinge and so fine they were nearly transparent. ‘It’s new to me too, as I’ve only recently discovered I can do this.’
Her face was flushed with elation. ‘You look gorgeous, my love.’
His fur was a light grey, and his ears were long, while his nose was a short snout. He imagined his eyes were still red. Perhaps he had gone too far in showing her this form. Was she going to lose her mind over it? ‘You have a way with words, my sweet.’ He supposed being a gorgeous bat was better than an ugly one. At least he knew she was far too genuine to lie to him.
Speechless, Rascal was staring at him, confused, and then his eyes widened with amazement.
‘Such a superb texture…’ She fawned over his fur, ‘and tiny red eyes…beautiful.’
‘Mmm… well, I wouldn’t describe it as an attractive creature.’ Rotating on her hand to get comfortable, he sat. His wing-legs rested by his side, and his body hunched over nearly into a furry ashen ball. ‘I had no idea flying would be such a tedious endeavor.’
She touched his head and ran her fingers down his downy fur. The dainty sensation was pleasing, and he involuntarily trembled inside at her gentle strokes.
Her voice was as tender as her fingers. ‘I think you may have to spend many hours in this form to learn the ways of that animal.’ She couldn’t stop grinning and caressing his head. ‘That’s how druids and shape-shifters learn.’
He couldn’t resist snuggling down under her careful fondling. He wondered if this was the method of attracting and keeping the animals in her life. She seemed to know exactly how to pet him. ‘Currently we don’t have that sort of time.’ He was still adjusting to this new form and the abilities it came with. ‘I seem to have heightened senses.’
‘It might help if we are faced with vampires,’ she paused to reflect on that, ‘then again, if you can’t fly well, it will cause more problems.’
‘That’s right.’ He stood and readied his wings to take off. He flapped around her, and not able to keep up the speed and momentum he tangled himself up and went down.
She picked him up and held him in both hands. ‘I know a little about bats. They can sense other bats that are around.’
He settled back on her hand. ‘That is good to know.’ His ears twitched, as he attempted hearing the area. There was a type of spatial awareness, and the sense of many creatures, or moving entities at least. It would take a lot of practice and training to learn the finer details. In the form of this animal, his senses had become so acute, his ears and head started to ache.
