The setting sun is not visible from here. It hides behind the Echinades, the small, uninhabited, verdant Ionian islands that enclose the Gulf of Astakos. But it paints the sky in all shades of pink, and bathes the mansions of the small town in its golden glow.
Built from the Astakos stone, the same one that built the current Parliament and the Great Britain Hotel in Athens in the 19th century, the 25 listed neoclassical buildings of Astakos, some of which line the waterfront and more on the parallel Ethnikis Antistaseos Street, are the first of the surprises that await you here. More will follow. Nestled between the slopes of Veloutsa and the waters of the Ionian Sea, Astakos is one of those places where you fall in love at first sight – precisely because you didn’t expect to fall in love, and they catch you sleeping. The bay on the edge of which it perches is so narrow that from above it resembles a mini fjord. The paved waterfront, where tavern and café tables are lined up on one side and boats and fishing boats next to luxury yachts on the other, brings to mind something from our childhood summers. And its… hinterland, the one you usually pass by in seaside places, hides the most architecturally interesting piece of the puzzle.
