Some Canadians were happy to tell an American actress about their appreciation of reproductive rights for women in this country after she took a shot at Canada's abortion laws.

Ashley Bratcher and her producer were in Ottawa for a screening of "Unplanned, which is based on the story of Abby Johnson, a former Planned Parenthood employee who became an anti-abortion activist.

Bratcher's comments were met by some Canadians letting her know they're happy to live in a country with access to free health care and medically necessary services.

Others told the actress to return to the United States, where abortion rights are still highly contentious.

For the record, my thoughts on abortion are as follows: it’s a women’s issue so women should be making the decisions. I don’t really know how I feel about the topic beyond this. Movies, on the other hand, those I know and as far as Unplanned goes, it would be laughable if it weren’t both subtly and overtly sinister; perhaps even dangerous.

Based on true events, Abby Johnson (Ashley Bratcher ) agrees to volunteer at Planned Parenthood after learning their ultimate goal is to provide reproductive care for women. Eventually making a career of it, her thoughts on the organization changes after assisting an ultrasound-guided suction aspiration abortion.

"Movie" isn't really the right word. We should instead say “propaganda piece”. Unplanned isn’t interested in balanced arguments. What it wants is to remind those watching of what they already know. To do so, it uses a number of cheap tricks. Even before the corny lawyer (played by Kaiser Johnson), we’re served up one gruesome scene of procedures gone wrong after another. Women leave Planned Parenthood shaken, often with pools of blood dripping down their legs courtesy of the incompetent doctor working. He’s a saint compared to the film’s villain, however. Robia Scott chews up the scenery playing Cheryl, Abby’s boss. She practically drools whenever a woman walks in the clinic. “Abortions are the fries of Planned Parenthood” she says in all earnestness. If this were a better movie, there’d be a mid-way twist revealing her as a demon-worshipping cultist, or cannibal. She’s THAT cartoonish.

With multiple eyebrow-raising developments, the film deliberately does everything but call Planned Parenthood evil. Subtle implications also made me squirm. It’s one of these junky, cheapo faith-based movies so of course, there aren't any lesbians in the film… but Tina Toner does play a character which might as well be, and her advice leads to Abby suffering a lot. Am I looking too much into it? Maybe. Most of the time, the film's as subtle as a mushroom cloud.

It clumsily attempts to condense all of Abby Johnson’s life in 106 minutes (felt so much longer). It has flashbacks within flashbacks, hastily-introduced characters which'll leave you confused, and the story doesn't flow well. Then, there are the performances. Ashley Bratcher does an ok job. Most of the people surrounding her are terrible. In their defense, the material they’ve been given is awful.

Unplanned accomplishes what it seeks to, though the cameo from Michael J. Lindell, misshapen storyline and embarrassingly broad characters - not to mention the overly graphic content - may turn even hardcore church-goers away. There's nothing here for anyone else. In fact, you'll likely leave angry. This movie isn't interested in having a discussion. We never see a girl walk into Planned traumatized after being date-raped, something I'd call a legit reason for wanting to abort. If it weren't for a scene where Abby grabs a pregnancy test, you'd swear all the organization does is terminate pregnancies. The fact that it's playing in Canada deeply unsettled me. I left angry and depressed. (Theatrical version on the big screen, July 12, 2019)

Fox & Friends, Fox News’ flagship morning show, held a Bible study live on air on Friday in a departure from its regular programming. Co-host Ainsley Earhardt brought in her Bible study group, who appear on Fox Nation, to discuss Christianity but also to make some distinctly political points.

One of the women in the study group was Ashley Bratcher, star of Unplanned, a movie that has been widely panned as anti-abortion propaganda. Bratcher did not reference abortion directly, but she and Earhardt did discuss the movie in a way that was clearly intended to be a criticism of abortion.

The entire segment was a strange departure for a national cable news network. Fox News is consistently pro-Christian, but Friday’s Bible study took this to the next level. It’s hard to see the decision as anything other than Christian propaganda, albeit in a relatively light and innocuous form.
