Klaviertober day 20: a piece written by a composer when they were old
Well, most composers I listen to never actually got old, but fortunately not all of them. Sergey Rachmaninoff wrote this set of variations in 1931, and it is the last piano piece he ever wrote. He didn't liked to perfom it, and he always left out some of the variations at concerts. It is still considered a masterpiece, and if we think about the last years of Rachmaninoff, how he suffered from depression and how he missed Russia, and how life was between the two World Wars, this piece has a lot to tell to the listener. The mixture of different styles is really interesting: he used a baroque theme, in the 20th century as a composer whose works are mostly under the influence of romanticism.
Tchaikovsky by Reutlinger
Tchaikovsky : Overture 1812
Full, Choral - Ashkenazy
Famous and very realistic. The choral contributions are very spectacular and effective. And the cannons are as they should be: not blazing out the music ! This is not cannons with behind them overture 1812.This is 1812 with realistic Cannons! In this transcription by American conductor Igor Buketoff the following changes and additions were made: The opening segment, God Preserve Thy People is sung a cappella by a choir. A children's or women's choir is added to the flute and cor anglais duet rendition of At the Gate, at my Gate.
The orchestra and chorus unite in the climax with a triumphant version of God Preserve Thy People and God Save the Tsar.

Synagogue in Luzhki, Belarus | Built probably 1800s | Community: Ashkenazy | Currently abandoned
From wiki: "According to the 1921 Polish census, the population [of Luzhki] was 49.3% Polish, 25.5% Belarusian and 23.9% Jewish...In 1941, a Jewish ghetto was established in the settlement, and Jews were also subjected to forced labour. On 1 June 1942, the ghetto was dissolved and 528 Jews were massacred in a forest near the village."
I think this synagogue is still beautiful. May the memories of the Jews of Luzhki be for a blessing.

Wooden Synagogue in Voupa (Wołpa), Belarus | Built 18th century | Period: Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth

Wooden synagogue in Kostroma, Russia | Built 1907 | Material: Timber | Active 1907-1930 and again from 2001 to present | Community: Ashkenazy
Note from the Center of Jewish Art:
The synagogue was closed by the Soviet authorities in 1930. In the 1930s and 1940s, an illegal minyan gathered in the apartment of the shohet Yerahmiel Kugel, who hosted Rabbi Yosef Yitzhak Schneersohn during his short Kostroma exile. In the 1960s, the minyan was still gathering in a private apartment.
The synagogue was returned to the revived community in 1995–1998. It was renovated in 2000–2001 and again in 2020.
The synagogue serves a small community, which belongs to the Chabad-dominated Federation of Jewish Communities of Russia (FEOR). A small museum is in the process of installation right now. The synagogue also comprises a mikveh built in the western part of the structure with the basin for rainwater outside of it.
Butchers' Synagogue in Zhmerynka, Ukraine | Built ~1900 | Style: "brick style" (Russian Empire) | Community: Ashkenazy | Still currently used as a synagogue | Note: Synagogues in Eastern Europe were often built for members of a particular trade such as the butchers' or tailors' synagogues. Also, Jewish butchers were the first Jewish guild (Jews were not allowed to be a part of the Christian guilds in Europe so had to make their own).
