Daily affirmations: You will achieve corporeal union with God. Fasting is holy. Feasting is holy. Asceticism is holy. Hedonism is holy. "Holy Anorexia" is not holy. "Take and eat" are among the most holy words in the Holy Scriptures. The Eucharist is Ultimate Reality. Humanity does not live by bread alone, but neither do they live without it. You will fully realize your love of God in the land of the living. You will be be united to God in the land of the living. "I am my beloved's and he is mine."
.... I cannot help thinking that any religion which begins with a thirst for immortality is damned, as a religion, from the outset. Until a certain spiritual level has been reached, the promise of immortality will always operate as a bribe which vitiates the whole religion and infinitely inflames those very self-regards which religion must cut down and uproot. For the essence of religion, in my view, is the thirst for an end higher than natural ends; the finite self’s desire for, and acquiescence in, and self-rejection in favour of, an object wholly good and wholly good for it. That the self-rejection will turn out to be also a self-finding, that bread cast upon the waters will be found after many days, that to die is to live — these are sacred paradoxes of which the human race must not be told too soon.
C. S. Lewis, "Religion without Dogma?" in God in the Dock

getting a dumb phone. the way forward is not good or really convenient or fun by any means but the alternative is so gigantically evil that even entertaining the possibility will turn you into a pillar of salt. the only thing keeping people going is the unconscious belief that they will not have the phone forever. but if they were forced to confront the eventuality of living the rest of their days on the phone they would see. and it would be too horrible to recover from. better to look away.
