Her long-simmering rage boils over. âDonât call Maddox a blighted resource. Heâs a person. Just like me.â
âHe is nothing like you.â
âReally? Iâm a mage, someone you seem to think could transform into an abomination at any moment.â
âBecause Iâm the Inquisitor? Because you have to?â
âBecause youâre different!â
âDifferent fromâŚâ She leans toward him, for once hoping her fury is clearly visible on her face. âDifferent from what, Cullen? From all the other mages youâve ever watched? No, not watched, imprisoned.â
He slams his right fist into his left palm. âMages have to be protected from themselves! As soon as they gain their freedom, they turn to blood magic or worseââ
She flings one arm toward Skyhold. âHave any of our mage allies become abominations now that theyâre out of the Circles? Or fallen to the lure of blood magic? No! I havenât, Solas hasnât, Dorian hasnât, and none of them have, either. Despite the Breach, the Rifts, the all-too-thinness of the Veil. Perhaps so many of the mages you watched turned to such terrible deeds because of what you did to them.â
âYou demanded the annulment of the Fereldan Circle just in case any of the survivors had used blood magic! You were ready to condemn innocents out of fear!â
âHow do youââ Shock writes itself across his face. âYou didnât see what Uldred and his followers had done!â
âOh, that excuses you condoning murder? Do you realize how many peopleâhow many of my people have died thanks to similar excuses?â Aryn throws her hands in the air. âYou believe you care about me. Youâve decided Iâm different enough to tolerate my race, my background, your deep-seated fear of magic. But thatâs wrong. I wonât remain in a relationship with someone who has to excuse what I am.â
The volume of his voice abruptly drops. âYouâre breaking up with me?â
âI am.â I have to. This canât work.
âI thought⌠I thought we had something special.â
âSo did I. But your blighted prejudices keep getting in the way. And Iâm not going to sit around and wait for them to change.â She spins on her heel and leaves his tower, nearly colliding with a messenger on her way out.
