arwyn jousting longfic??👀 I am cheering you on based on this alone
YES! I’m so excited to actually write it and not have it swirling around my brain. Jousting. Competition. Romance. All of it.
The healing halls had been silent, for so many of the occupants were dead or falling towards death. As Eowyn lay there, her world consisted only of pain, pain upon pain; and grief like she had never felt before. The air, she remembered, smelt of the freshness of athelas and its sweet, green scent mocked her. She had laid there in the silence and wept, her skin pale, her arm throbbing–what remained of her sorrow was but a wisp that came in the night. In her dreams she saw only the faces of the dead, the smell of their dying–the wave was gone, it sat at her feet, devouring her tears.
In that quiet darkness, she had called out with hope foreign on her tongue, for a guide, and way out from this darkness. For if she could not seek death, and it could not come for her, then what was she to do?
The way came as an Elf wading into the waters of mortality, guiding Eowyn as a light towards the meaning of life. It was a beautiful way for them, Arwen teaching her to live with so much death, and Eowyn teaching her to live despite it. So it was that dying came upon their lips like laughter and only–only–did they come to gates of peace hand in hand. Ithilien shined, brighter than the whitewashed towers of Minas Tirith, sweeter than the hay-lined streets of Edoras–it shined with the quelling light of rejuvenation, and it fed itself into Eowyn’s very bones.
How long did she look for death? How long had it evaded her? How long was it until she looked into the eyes of a dying Elf and found herself hungry to devour the coming ages? Time held little meaning now, on Arwen’s skin she could taste the slow ache of forever.

Arwen and Eowyn trade tales in the fields of Ithilien, where all is green and good, and shadows feast only as memories.

Eowyn inhales, bliss hot on her tongue. If she willed it, she could imagine she was beneath her bed of furs in Edoras, Eomer somewhere in the room, watching the wind carry the rain and listening to the deep laugh of the skies. There, even in her fear, she would speak and revel in the tales their mother had told them–it was a great comfort and a greater sorrow. “I believe it had been well into Autumn, for the leaves felt like slick apple peels beneath my bare feet, and I do think my maid had fallen somewhere in this muck of memory, right there onto the hidden ground, linen splayed upon the reds and yellows.” “Am I meant to not laugh at this image?” “At the sorrow of Lady Gwyn? A shame,” Eowyn laughs as Arwen tugs at her ear. “I will continue: it was Autumn and the harvest had only just finished. The streets were lined with bushels of wheat and squash, and the stores filled thick with tawny rivers of ale. They say the smell of memories is the last to leave the mind; and I do not know the truth of that, only that I can smell the air of that day like I am still standing in the streets–my small world then was full of the sweetbitter of coming winter. Even now, I can feel the chill on my brow. “I came then, out from the stables–for as a young girl it was my duty to aid in the cleaning of my horse–and fled from Gwyn’s hands out into the peopled street. I stole from the bushels, and ran through the alleys with an apple in my hand. My people laughed, and some bristled, for I was, in my youth, surly and garish. And come this day, I was marked not by nobility, but by the horse fur on my garments and the wet wind in my hair. I left them all, however, for the lamentation of the fields, for there we had buried what remained of my father and I wished more than anything for his admonishment, for I missed even that. “It is odd, Arwen, how we grieve such things, is it not? How I missed my father’s cruelty and not his kindness. I wanted him to clot my ear and tell me to put on shoes–I wanted it like I wanted water when I thirst.” Arwen’s hands are pruned, but against her cheek they are still soft. “Grief is cruel in that way, it does not let you miss what you wish you could.”

i’ve recently become especially partial to arwen x eowyn because i enjoy the idea that they met each other in the fourth age and looked back at their husbands like.. huh.
It seems obvious that if Arwen is the moon, then Éowyn is the sun; but I say Arwen is the moon, yes, but Éowyn is the earth, for she grows even in great turmoil, and Arwen watches over her.
