Weaving Spells / Crone (2024-2026) Photography
Weaving Spells is a collaborative project with London-based artist Anaïs Lalange, who designed and handcrafted textile masks specifically for the photographs. Drawing on traditional myths and folklore, the works depict archetypal deities, with the mask acting as a transformative object—invoking primordial totems while simultaneously making an activist statement.
The balaclava-inspired design recalls the masks worn in protest movements. In these contexts, the balaclava has evolved into a powerful visual symbol of rebellion and resistance. Within this project, the masked figures emerge as archetypal characters who speak on behalf of nature — an activist gesture aligned with spiritual ecofeminist movements, rooted in care, resistance, and reconnection with the earth.
Weaving suggests a deliberate, creative act—threads of folklore, ecofeminism, and animism interlaced through image and object. It evokes traditionally feminine and earth-bound practices such as spinning, crafting, and ritual work, rooted in care and connection. Spells gestures toward the magical, symbolic, and spiritual dimension of the project: an animistic belief in a living, spiritually charged world, and the transformative power of ritual and masks. Here, spell-casting is not literal but metaphorical—a way of invoking wonder, intention, and a shared sense of ritual.
