SkekTember 2024, prompt 3: Sadness. 👇(Story below!)

~"What's wrong, Master?"

Nari furrowed her brow. That was the third time she asked, yet the Treasurer remained silent, almost absent, his pale eyes staring at some undefined spot beyond the table.

~"Master..." she insisted, softly, ~"Is it your head again?..."

The Skeksis Lord, usually imposing with his tall bearing and his bejeweled robes, produced a miserable hiss and looked pointedly aside, unwilling to acknowledge his suffering.

~"It is, then. Please, let me help. Is there anything I can do for you? Perhaps the Lord Scientist might have some kind of tea or brew that might-"

SkekShod's hissing grew louder at this, and two urgent words erupted from his beak; ~"Not...him!"

~"Why not, Master? He is the one who might have something that can ease your pain. I have seen the scar once, when the podlings were tying your headkerchief on place...I know it hurts. It has to. Please, let me help."

The Treasurer huffed, his eyes looking awkwardly back at the Gelfling who sat beside him. He knew that she could somehow guess how sad and miserable he felt some days, when the old injury stung and ached and he couldn't find his words so to put a full sentence together.

~"Alright", he muttered, stuttering ~"Don't...don't tell him..."

Nari nodded in agreement.

~"I will tell him that the tea is for me, Master. Please, just wait. I will be back in a moment!"

SkekShod watched her rush away, and pressed his hand even harder against his temple.

SkekTember 2024, prompt 2: Anxiety 👇(read story below!)

~"Please don't apply so much pressure, Gelfling! Remember you're making ink, not churning butter!", tutted the Illustrator, staring at her assistant who was sitting on a small pillow, using a pestle to grind coal powder, tree-gum and water into a thick, black substance.

~"I'm not pressing it that hard, Master! I promise!", huffed the Gelfling, smashing the pestle into the mortar with even more enthusiasm.

~"Ink-making is a delicate task. It requires a firm yet gentle hand. You will ruin it if you keep doing that." The Illustrator was starting to anxiously wring her hands.

~"It's these pesky crumbs in the coal powder that make it so complicated...I need them to dissolve but they won't...", replied the Gelfling matter-of-factly.

SkekLa's eyes widened.

~"CRUMBS? Wait, are there crumbs in the powder? Let me see that!" said the Skeksis, leaning forward to glare at the mixture as the Gelfling, stubbornly, kept struggling to crush something with the pestle.

~"Kirie, STOP! That's an ORDER!"

The Gelfling's ears perked up at the mention of her name, and she finally stopped working.

~"Why are you so upset, Master?"

SkekLa's eyes were round and crazed, one of her trembling hands pressed to her temple as she replied in dismay; ~"I have work to finish. I needed that ink right now, and it's ruined...Oh well. Strain off the crumbs.That will do, hopefully. That will do."

Every year I host a little Skeksis-inspired event called SkekTember! This was my submisson for day 1's propt, "The colleague", back in 2023. I thought it might be fun to share it here as a way to introduce my Fan-Character to those of you who might not know her! (Please, let me know if you would want to see the rest of this series of 10 drawings that contain random details about The Illustrator's life and her place in the court!)

SkekLa's main work consists in illustrating and embellishing the scrolls and books skekOk writes. The thing is, she hates to see her work mistreated in any manner, and the Scroll-Keeper has a tendency to poke at the ink while it's still fresh...

What if a Xenomorph from Aliens emerged from an urRu Mystic from The Dark Crystal...?

This commission was inspired by a wonderfully strange and creative idea by @Potatodude4525 — and I had an absolute blast bringing it to life!

SkekTember 2024, prompt 8: Pride (Story below👇)

The Garthim-Master's raucous laughter rumbled through the yard as he strutted, full of himself, chest out and head held up high.

His hopes and dreams of rising in position felt closer to come true.

~"You've outdone yourself, Master, if I may say so"~ commented Moro, his assistant and head of the armorers who had worked on the new ornate dagger that hung from the Skeksis' neck, glinting in contrast to his rough, shell-made chest armour.

~"I did! The Emperor was really impressed when he saw my new pendant. Thinking to make this necklace that is also a weapon to symbolise my title was a great idea. But it was you and your apprentices who forged it, it was all thanks to you, Moro!"~ replied skekUng, fluffing up with pride.

The Gelfling smiled discreetly, his arms crossed behind his back.

- "Thank you, Mylord."

~"I say you deserve a prize for this!"~ considered the Garthim-Master ~" You Gelflings like kavekha wine, don't you?"~

Moro's ears perked up.

~"Well, Master, you know I'm not made of stone. I couldn't say no to such a generous offer!"~

SkekUng bellowed with laughter again.

~"Good, good; it is yours, then! A whole jug full of red kavekha wine! It's not every day that the Emperor praises someone as much as he did me today. This calls for a cellebration!"~

SkekTember 2024, prompt 5: Excitement (Story below!👇)

The cheerful melody of the Satirist's lute stopped just before the Gelfling made one final spin.

She stopped, frowning in disappointment.

~"Master! Why did you stop right when the music was getting funnier?"~

SkekLi giggled, adjusting the pegs of his instrument.

~"Didn't you notice how I was going out of tune, Nael? I'd better stop before one of my strings bursts and the music goes from fun to ridiculous!"~

Spreading her wings so that the tiny bells she had tied to them rang conspicuously and stomping her foot wilfully on the ground, the Gelfling complained ~"But if I don't rehearse, I won't be able to put on a good show at dinner!"~ and then added , maliciously ~"...The Emperor is not going to like watching a bad or boring buffoonery act..."~

The Satirist tilted his head, contemplatively.

~"Woe is me!"~he said, with dramatic sarcasm~" Who knows what he might do to us if we fail to be funny! Hurry up then, Nael! Dance for our lives! Dance!"

Then he suddenly began to play the lute again, frantically, with a hearthy laugh.

Giving out a cheerful cry, the Gelfling jumped again and again, pirouetting and spreading her wings, to the sound of a fast and lively rhythm, while skekLi sang a tune in Skexish.

~"Yes! The Drunken Gelfling Sailor!"~Cheered Nael, delighted~" Haha, Master, that's my favorite song!"
