The Waterfall Building is made up of four connected buildings that work with the slope of the site and define the inner courtyard. This study model shows the original design intent of the windows with less frames, embedded within the concrete. The Waterfall Building’s 40-foot long curtain of water flows from the curved underside of the courtyard’s opening into a large reflecting pool which scatters light back to the ceiling, creating a warm and captivating entrance after dusk. The studios of the Waterfall Building are based on an interlocking unit plan that allows every studio to have a 16-foot-high clear space and exposure in two directions, either north/south or east/west giving every studio natural through-ventilation. The goal was to create simple, elegant spaces with the maximum natural light available, providing a “blank palette” for inhabitants to customize as they desired. The Waterfall Building—Nick Milkovich Architects with Arthur Erickson, completed 2001 In 2002, the Waterfall Building received the Architectural Institute of British Columbia (AIBC) Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia Award for Excellence in Architecture Medal. The original concept included artist live/work studios, an art gallery, and commercial retail space, with two levels of parking below. An important goal was to encourage a sense of community within the complex and a strong connection to the street and neighbouring community. To foster this, all units were grouped around an inner courtyard filled with south facing light, offering a tranquil respite with a welcoming connection from the street. The courtyard was landscaped with deer ferns, moss gardens, cherry trees and grass planted between the concrete pavers, with white roses tumbling down from above the large glazed wedge-shaped restaurant/gallery space.
