The Scream
Kent Monkman, The Scream (2017). Acrylic on canvas, 213.4 x 274.3 cm. Private Collection.
Kent Monkmanâs The Scream is a haunting and visceral representation of one of Canadaâs darkest chaptersâthe forced removal of Indigenous children from their families. Through his signature blend of historical references and contemporary critique, Monkman does not just depict history; he demands that we confront it.
The Violence of Colonialism
At first glance, The Scream is overwhelming. Chaos erupts across the canvas as uniformed government agents, priests, and nuns violently seize Indigenous children from their mothers. The raw, desperate emotion in the figuresâ faces is nearly unbearable. Monkman captures a moment that is both historical and ongoing, referencing the traumatic legacy of the residential school system and the Sixties Scoop. The paintingâs vivid, almost cinematic quality forces viewers to witness the horrors inflicted upon generations of Indigenous peoples.
Subverting Traditional Art Forms
Monkman frequently reinterprets classical European painting styles to expose colonial violence, and The Scream is no exception. The composition recalls Baroque and Romantic historical paintings, yet the subject matter is far removed from the grand narratives of European conquest and power. Instead of glorifying authority, Monkman lays bare its brutality. By using a style typically reserved for stories of heroism, he turns the lens on the aggressors, making them impossible to ignore.
The Power of Perspective
While the oppressors in the painting are detailed and recognizable, the Indigenous figures are depicted in varying states of distortion, their faces frozen in expressions of anguish. This visual choice reflects how Indigenous voices and stories have often been silenced or erased. Yet, through this distortion, Monkman makes their suffering undeniable. The painting shifts the focus from the colonizersâso often the centre of historical narrativesâto the victims and survivors of these violent policies.
Reflecting on Trauma and Resilience
Beyond its depiction of trauma, The Scream is also an act of reclamation. Monkman, a Cree artist, creates work that reclaims Indigenous stories and spaces in the art world. This painting is not just about sufferingâit is about survival. By forcing audiences to bear witness, he ensures that these histories are not forgotten, and that dialogue around reconciliation continues.
What Does It Mean to Bear Witness?
The Scream demands more than passive viewing. It forces us to ask: What does it mean to bear witness to history? How do we move beyond acknowledging past atrocities and toward real justice for Indigenous communities?
Rage is power. Fury is creation.
Weâre FREAKIN EXCITED to introduce Your Body, My Rage: A Feminine Rage Horror Anthology centered on feminine rage, empowerment, and reclamation. This is your chance to take the angerâthe raw, visceral, transformative kindâand turn it into action.
Weâre looking for horror short stories and artwork that push boundaries, twist genres, and scream truth. Whether itâs blood-soaked body horror, spine-chilling ghost stories, or something weâve never seen before, your rage has a place here. The checklist on slide 2 covers all kinds of sub-genres to pick from, so pick your poison and go wild.
Proceeds from this anthology will be donated to advocacy organizations championing womenâs rights and marginalized communities, with a focus on Black and Indigenous women. We want this to be a group effort all around, so those who preorder get to vote on where the proceeds go!

Grass root with natural lac dye 𧥠 A few years ago I came across some willow root growing underwater in a river in the UK and it got me thinking about the binding properties of root: What if we could grow our clothes from seed?  As an underwater photographer (my real job @zenaholloway ) I was looking for solutions to the problem of plastic pollution in our oceans and I found that I could sustainably grow grass seed in beeswax moulds. â¨â¨Scientists predict that nearly all the coral will be gone by 2050 due to global warming đ˘ so my response is to grow a sustainable coral reef from grass root.  I want to imagine a future that still has coral reefs. They support 25% of all marine life, and are some of the most spectacular places on the planet (especially if youâre an underwater photographer đ)  Iâll be exhibiting my âcoralâ with Material Matters from 22-25 September, top floor at the iconic Bargehouse @oxotowerwharf on Londonâs South Bank. â¨Be sure to register early for free tickets on @materialmatters.design See you there⌠#saveouroceans #saveourseas #coralbleaching #coral #artforchange #ecoart #bioart #fibreart #slowart #rethink #biotechnology #naturaldye #naturaldyeing #maker #contemporarycraft #makersmovement (at The Oxo Tower, Southbank) https://www.instagram.com/p/CiVbsXjoRpF/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Art gift 100! This one is going to a contributor to my Friends of the Earth fundraiser. (Every donation of $5 or more gets a small surprise piece of original bug art in the mail. Not too late to get one.) This is a male goliath beetle. Itâs a hero of the environment and the largest beetle in the world, up to 4.3 inches long. Its short lifeâ just a few monthsâbegins as an egg buried in the soil. It goes through three metamorphoses before reaching maturity. As an adult, it likes the sweet life, eats sweet foodâtree sap and rotting fruitâthough in earlier life it requires more protein and will also eat rotting plant and animal matter, including dung. It plays an important role in the tropical African forest ecosystem, cleaning up garbage and recycling nutrients back into soil. It uses its claws to climb trees, but can also fly with its double set of wings (inner and outer). The goliath beetle is very strong. It can carry loads up to 850 times its own weight. When I grow up, I want to be just like the goliath beetle. (Except for the part about eating dung.) . Goliath beetle, ink on paper, 4.5 x 6.5â - Iâm drawing bugs to draw attention to the devastating loss of insect life on earth due to climate change, deforestation, and industrial agriculture. These problems are large scale and require organized efforts to fix, not just individual action. But the good news is, we can join up and support organizations doing the work. âShe Saysâ / oil on canvas for @thinkspace_art upcoming group show "Mother Earth: We Are All Oneâ which will take place from June 27 â July 18. From @thinkspace_art : âWeâre proud to share that our family of creatives are coming together for a very special group show, that will help shine a light on topics currently at the forefront of everyoneâs thoughts. Mother Earth: We Are All One will bring together 63 artists, all of whom have been asked to work within the same space confines of 12Ă12 inches (30Ă30 cm) and to take into consideration the general state of our Mother Earth and how much we have scarred her for our own gain and how many species of animals have gone extinct due to our constant advancement and taking over of lands near and far. Weâve asked them all to also consider how the current pandemic has so clearly illustrated that we are all in this together, and when we work together as one, anything is possible. To single out any one person due to their race, religion or sexual orientation is an archaic way of thinking that needs to be abolished. Fundamentalist extremism has been rearing its ugly head all around the world over the last couple years, and it needs to be stopped. A portion of the proceeds from this special exhibition will be donated to the NAACP Legal Defense Fund to help fight systemic racism. A portion will also be donated to our longtime partners at Born Free USA to help them in their goals of ensuring that all wild animals, whether living in captivity or in the wild, are treated with compassion and respect and are able to live their lives according to their needs.â #thinkspacegallery #thinkspacefamily #motherearth #theenvironment #artforchange #collectingart #soulsinmotion #popsurrealism #naacplegaldefensefund #fightthegoodfight #extinctionrebellion #protest #weareallone (at Thinkspace Projects) https://www.instagram.com/p/CBy_iZRjkMt/?igshid=i92w6w2vv2ew
