Ein Aufenthalt in Graz – ein besonderes Geburtstagsgeschenk, das mir mein Schatz Anita zu meinem Ehrentag machte.

As Henry Sayer emphasized, understanding art involves more than simply appreciating visual beauty; it requires considering a work’s context and meaning.

This connects to our Week 4 reflective writing session, where we learned to analyze artworks based on their history, intent, and subject matter. Examining designs that communicated information clearly through simple illustrations and consistent colors, as well as packaging influenced by 1980s pop culture, highlighted the importance of observing works independently and reflecting on how design choices relate to context and purpose.

At the National Gallery Singapore, I was able to view artworks within their historical and social context. Abdul Ghani Hamid’s works demonstrated how minimal elements convey cultural identity and philosophical ideas through ink drawings. His fluid lines and overlapping forms reflect his interest in language, individuality, and Singapore’s layered identities. Observing these works in person allowed me to sense some of the connections his art shares with Malay modern art and sparked my curiosity about its broader artistic context.

Seeing the artworks firsthand, I noticed how texture, scale, and arrangement shaped meaning in ways online images could not. Ghani’s lines and simplified forms reminded me of drawings I had created, including my patterned Mona Lisa pen drawing and figure sketches. This made me reconsider how line, space, and simplified forms can serve as powerful tools for expression.

Through this experience, I also identified areas for improvement. I did not conduct detailed comparative analyses at the time, so next I want to explore differences among other artists from the same period. By referencing Ghani’s line work and minimalist composition, I plan to expand my drawing methods and explore how form connects with meaning, helping me make more deliberate visual choices in future projects.
