Making six huge frames for Titian's mythological paintings | National Gallery
This video is particularly interesting as frames are something many might overlook, but they are very important. Their job is to compliment the work in a subtle way, without drawing attention away from it. It’s fascinating to watch this video as they create frames just as they would have during the Renaissance. I found the application of gold leaf to be particularly interesting!
Peter Schade, the Head of the Framing department at the National Gallery, shows the process of creating six huge matching frames for the Titian: Love Desire Death exhibition. Matthias Wivel, Curator of 16th-century Italian paintings, and curator of the exhibition, discusses how these frames complement the paintings, known as Titian's 'poesie'.
