In Paris this year I was very moved by this exhibit at the Musée de la Musique showing Maurice Maréchal, one of the greatest cellists of his time, and this makeshift cello in the trenches of WWI. The cello, nicknamed “Le Poilu”, was made in June 1915 by two soldiers, Plicque and Neyen, both carpenters in civilian life. They made this cello for Maréchal using the wood from a German ammunitions box and pieces of an oak door. Plicque and Neyen did not survive the war but Maréchal went on to have a successful career, although it was interrupted again by the second world war. #armistice100 #worldwarone (at Parc de la Villette) https://www.instagram.com/p/BqEJwKzBoXN/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=18gxlg224w7ha

Today on Veterans Day, we salute all our veterans of the Armed Forces, past and present, and remember the men of the 107th Infantry in World War I. On this day in France in 1918, the 107th celebrated the signing of the Armistice with French and British troops. As veterans and active duty members gather today in the halls of the Armory to commemorate this centennial, we thank you all for your service and sacrifice.
“The Queen and Members of the Royal Family will attend a number of national engagements to mark #Remembrance Day, and the centenary of the end of the First World War. #Armistice100 “
In memory of the many millions of people that lost their lives and loved ones during the horror of the First World War... The very start of another new pendant carving. Whilst it is not my way to work on more than one carving at a time, I felt that I had to share this with you as on this day, exactly one hundred years since the end of what was one of the bloodiest conflicts in the history of the human race. . . . #armistice100 #woodcarving #woodart #handmade #handcarved #art #artist #nature #craft #maker #makersmovement #inspiredbynature #craftsposure #imadethis #calledtobecreative #postitfortheaesthetic #creativehappylife #beautifulthings https://www.instagram.com/p/BqCWTKXHtod/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=i7vtcy479l5a
